Methods and Materials

If two or more organisms that use the same limited resources live together then

competition will happen. Independent variable was the organisms in the eco-column, dependent

variable was competition and the control variable was water, temperature and aquatic plants.

This experiment was started on January 2015. Started first day with brought all materials to

school. Cut two six liters water bottle in a half. Used two pieces of the top and one piece of the

bottom. Created the land section first, used one of the top pieces, removed the lid and covered

with plastic that had a few tiny holes instead so water would be ale to pass through. Put about

five handfuls of soil into that top part of the water bottle. Put five – six seeds of mung beans on

top of the soil and the plant. Attached another piece of the top part of the water bottle on top of

the land section with glue and tape by turn the side that had lid away and attached another side

together. Finished the land section, next the aquatic section. Used the bottom part of the water

bottle, poured water inside about half of that bottom part. Put two or three seaweeds inside and

two pieces of stone. Placed the land section above the aquatic section. On the very top of eco-

column put the lid of the water bottle on. The eco-column was finished, placed the eco-column

where there were a little bit of sunlight. Observed the eco-column on January 18 and 21 by

counting the snails that were alive and dead.
