Piece 1:
1. Mark face side and face edge
using your pencil.
2.Make sure your piece is 300mm
long
300mm

3.Using you tri square and pencil mark the

shoulders of the dovetails 18mm
18mm

10mm 10mm
4. Set your
sliding
bevel to a
slope of Slope 1:6
1:6 and
mark
dovetails.
18mm 5. Mark the dovetails
around the end grain.
These lines should be
perpendicular to the edge
of the piece.

6. Using the sliding

bevel repeat
process (4) on the
opposite face of
the piece.

7.Repeat on opposite side of piece

8. Mark waste material on the piece using X’s.

9. With piece 2 repeat the process of steps from

1-7.
10. Using your tennon saw cut on the
waste side of the lines

11. Number the ends of the pieces to

keep track of which joints match up with
each other later.

1 2 2 3 3 4 4 1

 Now matching the numbers you can mark

the pins to match with the dovetails.
12. Put piece with ends marked 1 and
2 in the vice vertically and protruding
up just far enough for he dovetail to
rest over it.
2

13. Using a sharp pencil mark the pins using

the dovetails as a template.
 make sure both pieces are perfectly in line.
 The marking on the end grain should look like this.

14.Using you tri square and pencil mark the

shoulders of the tails 18mm.
18mm

15. Using the

tri square
bring down
the lines
from the end
grain as far
as your
shoulder line
 Your face side should look like this

2
 Your back face should look like this

16. Mark waste material.

17. Cut on the waste side of the line using
the tennon saw.
 dont cut below the shoulder line.
18. Use coping saw to cut down and then turn it
gently before the shoulder line and cut horizontally
above the shoulder line.

 You will now just be left with the pins

19. Clean up the tails using the chisel.
Do this until dovetails fit flush.
 Ensure dovetails fit as follows

20. Repeat this process on all four joints.

 Ensure you keep track of which ends belong with

each other

1 2 2 3 3 4 4 1
 Once all four joints are fitting you will
have a frame like this.

 Before gluing
up we must
complete the
clock
 Ensure you
have the
correct
dimensions of
timber.

 These square pieces

come already with a
cut out for the clock
component. This
was done on the
router.

21. Get the centre

point of the square by
drawing an X from
corner to corner
diagonally.

 Where the lines

intersect is the
midpoint.
22. Using a
compass mark a
circle with a
diameter of
250mm

23. Mark the

waste using X’s.

24. Using the coping saw cut to the waste side

of the line.
 Note leave a mm of waste to take off with
the plane
25. Using your plane, take off the
remaining material down as far as
the waste line.

26. Using the drill

press drill through the
centre point of the
clock face.
 The centre of the
clock is marked
with an X already.
 Use diameter 6mm
drill bit.
27. Divide up the clock face with a 60/30
degree set square.

28. Draw in the numbers with pencil

on the correct position of the clock
face.
 Use the 60/30 degree lines as a
guide. 12

29. After getting the spacing for the numbers
correct with the pencil you can go over the
numbers with the burner.

 we will be putting holes

in the side of the clock
face perpendicular to
the centre line going
through numbers 9 and
3. draw a line around the
edge with your tri
square.
30. Mark centre point with
pencil.
31. Using the hand drill and 8mm drill
bit drill through the centre point
roughly 10mm

 On our dovetail pieces from the first

process we must find the centre point on
the back face.

32. Measure in 150mm from the end and make

a mark with your pencil.
33. Likewise measure down 25mm. Make a
mark with your pencil.

34. Drill a hole with a hand

drill and drill bit 8mm
through the centre point.
Drill roughly 10mm deep.
35. Gluing up process, cover
entire surfaces with glue and
assemble. Apply clamp to
dovetail frame.
 no glue required for
dowels
 Allow dry for 24 hours.

36. Put in clock component
