ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

irector Barry Son ne nfe ld ca ll s the Addamses "the ultimare
functional family. The parents love the children. The mother and
father love each othe r. They don't cha nge their values based o n a
wh im. Th ey' re a perfect family."

"It' s an interesting thing making a sequel to 'The Addams Family... ·

Son nenfeld says. "beca use there are ce rtain characters w ho ca n cha nge and
grow and become different. An d there are other cha racters who the audience
doesn't want to see change . For in stance. yo u wo uldn't want to make a movie
whe re Go mez and Morti cia get a divorce - t hey have a pe rfect re lationship.
You wo uldn't wa nt Wednesday to be any mo re evil o r deadpan. or Pugsley to
be a ny more or less goofy."

"At the beginning of the movie we find t hat Fester is very lo ne ly. He rea li zes
t hat eve ryo ne's very happy - t he fam ily has another baby - and Feste r is lonely.
He wants a mate."

Observes Sonnenfe ld . "One of the things we've done w it h 'Ad dams Family
Va lu es' is to have more of a story than in 'The Addams Family,' and in troduce
new characters. So we have a n oppo rtuni stic nann y. baby Pubert . a nd Joe l
Glicke r. Wedn esday's first boyfri end."

Screenwriter Paul Rudnick re li shes the

deliciou s mischief of the Addams psyche.
"The best t hing about w ri ting for the
Adda ms Family is that yo u don't have to be
wholeso me," says Rudnick. who disp lays an
obvious playful glee about the opportun ity
to portray the hap py prankishness a nd
twisted humor of the Addams clan. Rudnick
worked extens ive ly on the first Adda ms film.
and ''Addams Family Va lu es" is his origin al
screenp lay.

Co mm e nts executive produce r David

Nicksay. "As yo u get to know t he m. yo u real ize that the Addamses have
fantastic traditions which they pass o n to each other. They love each other
ve ry mu ch. They che ri s h each othe r's freedom to be in dividual. quirk y.
however they want to be, a nd so they have a rea lly great working fam ily un it."

Says RaulJulia, "I think the appea l of t he Addams Fam ily is t hat they are
ve ry eccentric and nau ghty. And we all have in ourselves t he desire to be
naughty once in a w hile."

Anj e li ra Hu sto n adds, '" think within all of us there is a search for things
that are a little off-cente r and offbeat. 'think their appeal is the fa ct that t hey
accept what is to the normal world
unacceptable- in fact they e mbrace
what is unacceptable-and that t hey
have such a wo nderful understand ing
of each ot her. Th ey have wo nd e rful
fam ily val ues. They are devoted to
each other."

Huston describes the re lationship

betwee n Morticia and Go mez as
"extremely loving a nd ve ry passionate,
If anything, , think their passion
deepens with th e yea rs. "

Hu sto n has done so me th in king

about the nature of her Adda ms alter
ego. "The re are certain questions
about Mort icia," she smil es, "such as
'Does Morticia wake up and put t hat
outfit on?' My fee ling about her always was that t hi s is how she wakes up in
the morning. There is a question as to whethe r Morticia has legs."

Raul Ju li a sees Gomez as a very romantic cha racte r. "He's very mu ch in

love with Morticia. And he's like a swashbu ckl ing , romanti c, crazy man. Whe n
Gomez gets upset, it' s like a vo lca no. He also has t he spirit of a child, whi ch
he has neve r lost. He ca n be ve ry naive, but t hin gs a lways turn o ut fin e fo r him
somehow."

The chemi stry betwee n Go mez and Morticia is an extens io n of t he

friendship betwee n Raul Juli a a nd Anjel ica Hu sto n. "By the time we sta rted
filming (the fir st 'Addams'), we were good frie nds," he remembers. Thi s
closen ess was essent ial w he n it ca me time to fi lm the e laborate tango
sequence in "Addams Fa mily Val ues." The setting for their dance is a mossy
French restau rant where Gomez a nd Morticia have taken Fester and Debb ie to
di nner.

"The tango is such a unique way of ex pressi ng love and romance," obse rves
Julia, w ho o nce took tango lessons with hi s w ife in Arge ntina. Severa l
rehea rsa ls with choreographer Peter Anastos led to t he success of t he
sequ e nce. "Peter was very ope n to suggestio ns," says Julia . "Reme mbe r, thi s is
not a serious Argentin ean ta ngo - it' s a n Adda ms Family tango."

Remembers Huston, "We spent a lot of t im e rehea rs ing and pe rfecting our
tango. It was the first t im e I've bee n involved in dance on film , a nd it required
a lot of concentration , but it was fun."

Ca re l Struycke n , t he seven-feet-tall, Dutch-born actor who plays t he quietly

intimidating butle r Lurch, sees hi s character as th e protector of the family:
"He's there w he n he needs to be and he knows
in advance when t hings are goi ng to go aw ry." It
is Lu rch w ho looks after the Addams Fa mily
mans ion, which Stru ycke n re mind s is
"sur rou nded by acres an d acres of g raveyard,
with thou sands of to mbsto nes. I t hin k one of
the famil y's regular pa stimes is digg ing up old
bo nes. And I think long, long ago, w he n they
needed a fresh serva nt, they we nt o ut and dug
up so me bones and I think Lurch is really a
co mpil atio n of deceased Adda ms Fami ly
relatives. He's really, literally, a part of t he
family."

Caro l Ka ne, w ho plays Granny, com me nts

abo ut her role, "S he is Mort icia's moth e r and th ere is so me ta lk abo ut t he fa ct
that she may also be Go mez's and Feste r's mothe r."

The second Adda ms Fa mily motion picture finds Wednesday Addams w ith
he r first boyfrie nd. Chri stina Ricci, w ho turne d 13 during th e filmin g of
"Addam s Fam ily Values," has a very clear und ersta nding of he r cha racter:
"Wed nesday is ve ry mature. She is very secure in he r hou se and with her
family, and a ny new pe rson makes her ve ry suspicio us. As s he g rows up , s he
starts to look more a nd mo re like Mort icia. She wants to be just li ke her
mother. "

When Debbie Jellinsky, ba by Pubert's new nanny, co mes to work for the
famil y, Wed nesday is imm ediately wa ry of he r inte nti o ns a nd soon observes
Debb ie go ing through t he fa mily's finan cial le dgers.

Exp lains David Nicksay, "De bbi e is a bl ack w idow - a se ri al mu rderess,

sli g htly 'round t he bend, but 'ro und t he be nd in th e se nse that she's a rea l
co nfo rmi st to what we ca ll 't raditi o nal' Ame ri ca n val ues: upwa rdl y mobil e,
co nsum e r o ri e nted. She co mes into thi s famil y w it h the inte nt ion of tearing it
apart, a nd she finds t he one famil y in th e wo rld she ca n't destroy. Try as she
does, t hey are not at al l what she expects."

The role of Debb ie was the g rea t casti ng chall enge of "Addams Fa mily
Values." Says Nicksay. "joan Cusack brings a kind of un pred icta bility to t he
role that is wonde rful. What's ve ry important in a movie like th is, is t hat t he
villa in be great. And like 'Batman' had a great vill ain in j ack Nicho lson as the
joker, joan Cu sack adds the same kin d of ene rgy to the sto ry."

In order to manipul ate Uncle Fester and get her way, De bbi e rea li zes t hat
she must get Wednesday and Pugsley o ut of t he house . She co nvinces
Mo rticia a nd Comez to send t hem to summer ca mp.

"Feste r w ri tes to Wed nesday and Pugsley at Camp Chippewa, te lling them
he can never see t he m aga in ," says j immy Workman. "They know something's
wro ng and t ry to get out of the camp any way they can, but t he othe r ca mpe rs
always seem to catch t hem."

Camp Ch ippewa is the pe rfect, rustic summer get-away fo r the offspri ng of

class-co nsc ious yuppies - and the last place in t he world t hat Wednesday and
Pugsley wou ld choose to be. Iro nically, it is he re that Wedn esday unexpectedly
meets a kin dred spi rit and fee ls t he bloom of first ro ma nce. That boy is j oel
Clicker (David Kr umholtz), who ca n't fi nd anything to
like about summer camp either.

"We meet joel at summer ca mp, and it see ms he's

bee n over-coddled by his mother and he's all ergic to
eve ryt hing," says Ricci. "He's a tota l hypochond riac."

'Joel is bas ica lly me as a kid," says d irector

Son ne nfe ld. "He doesn't li ke bugs, doesn't li ke t he
outdoors, wo ul d rather be read ing ." So nnenfe ld
appears as joel's fat her in t he movie -"because I was
too old to play joel," he exp lain s.

Actor Dav id Krumho ltz says, 'J oel likes the way
Wed nesday is not afraid to ta lk, because he's not very o utgo ing. He's ve ry shy
and ne rvo us, an d she's not at a ll. He loves t he we ird ness of Wed nesday's
fa mily, and I t hink he fits right in and he's glad he does. He fin ds Wedn esday
bea utiful. And they both think t he idea of gree n trees and a ni ce, bea ut iful
lake is t he ir ve rsion of he ll."

ADDAMS FAMILY PRODUCTION VALUES

II n t he ir re turn vis it to t he Adda ms Mans io n, film goe rs who

de li ghted in the Addams'distin ctive ap proac h to in te ri or
des ig n and fash ion will be t reated to many new di scove ries .

So nn e nfe ld and Rud in agreed that t he fa mily mans io n of the seco nd

Adda ms adventure should be a home much like the o ne Charles Adda ms d rew
in his cartoons.
"I sa id that I co uldn't do much better than to try a nd bring the Addams
ca rtoo ns to life, because I think this man was a ge nius," says production
designer Ken Adam . "I made quite sure that I wou ld go back to t he Addams
cartoons with a touch of Ken Adam thrown in."

Wherever possible Ada m em ulated Addams: the small gal lery running on
top of Gomez's study, the bed in Wednesday's bedroom. the kitchen, the attic.
t he wallpaper, the out-of-plumb walls. "I think in every roo m in the house
there a re eleme nts of Cha rle s Adda ms,"' the production designer says. In
Pubert's nursery, however. th ere was no Addams prototype. "I tried to go back
to the Charles Addams style of drawing certain a nima ls - g rotesque ones, to be
sure.

"At Warner Bros., we built the exterior facade of t he house with the
conservatory, dining room and e ntry hall,"' reca ll s Ada m. "At CBS Studio Ce nter
we built the cemetery with the co nse rvato ry and dining room. which
comprised the rear and side of the house. And at Paramount there is the
ground or first floor of the house on Stage 20, also with the conservatory wall.
and t he seco nd floor of the house on Stage 3 1. So we ended up building the
conservatory, or parts of it , on three different stages.

"We had to pull out all the stops, all the things I have learned in my 46 years
of experie nce," Adam says. "We we re building on seve n sound stages at o ne
time. Even on some of the g iga ntic James Bond pictures I did, I have never
built on that many stages at the same time." These stages were used for t he
va ri o us inte ri ors of the Addams hou se, Debbie and Fester's Hawa iian
honeymoon suite, and the French resta ura nt grotto.

For the ce mete ry set, Ada m ca me up w ith

the idea of building part of it in forced
perspective. "We built it in co mpos ite with
part of the house," he says. One of the new
additions to the house is the Conservatory,
wh ich appears in a very primitive way in some
of t he Adda ms cartoo ns -" look ing like a big
bird cage." he says.

Severa l locations a round the Los Angeles

area serve to take the Addamses out of their
crumbling man sio n. Among them a re East
L.A."s Linda Vista Hospital, the Long Beach
Airport Terminal, and private homes in
Pasadena and Pa los Verde s.

Californ ia's Sequoia National Forest provided a picturesque summ er

camps ite- and a new setting for torture - for the Adda ms child ren, Wednesday
and Pugsley. Located 50 miles east of the San Joaquin Valley city of Fresno,
and home to fi ve YMCA ca mpsi tes, Seq uo ia Lake provided the produ ction
com pany with two d istinct locales. The a rrival of the ca mpe rs took place at
Ca mp Seq uo ia, and the pagea nt se quence was set across t he lake at Camp
Tulequoia.

An objective of costum e designer Theo ni V. Aldredge was to be faithful to

the Addams' flair for th e dramatic in their appa rel whil e accentuating their
pencha nt fo r t he romantic. Working with Ken Adam, Aldredge intens ifie d the
wardrobe's look and gave it a bit more color-
except in t he case of Morticia, who always
dresses in black. In "Ad dam s Fa mily Val ues,"
however, Morticia's black dresses are very
di sti nctive a nd elaborate creations.

The indistinct time pe riod also gave

Ald redge room to be creative, co mbining
apparel from many diffe re nt e ras. The
Adclams Family made t heir de but in the
1930s, so Aldredge dressed Gomez in '30s-era
suits. "Wednesday, Pugs ley and Granny stay
ve ry mu ch like the o riginal Addam s drawings,
but with eve ryone e lse we've gone every which way ... Granny was a lot of
fun because we put everything on her. If you look at close-ups of her, she's got
dead birds in her hair and feathe rs. Ca rol Kane enjoyed adding things, too. 1
think Gra nny ca rri es her wea lth with her so that, just in case something
happe ns, God fo rbid she doesn't have it on."

The film presented one ve ry un-Addams-i sh characte r for Aldredge to

clothe: Debbie Je llinsky, t he nanny with the horribl e secret. She wears pastel s
- an Ad dams faux pas of th e hi ghest o rd er. "Debbie borders o n rea lly tacky
taste," says the designe r. "We tri ed to put in a little bad taste, but she ca n get
away with it because she's very pretty."

Aldredge says that Joa n Cusack - the actress wearing the dreaded pinks and
lavende rs and beiges - was a de li ght: "She has a great sense of humor and
eve rything I do becomes that much mo re amp lifi ed." It's Debbie who gets
Fester into sweate rs. A suburban Adda ms is a sight to behold.

In addition to t he co ntributions of cast members and des ign and wardrobe

perso nn el to the Adda ms aura , the film also depends on visual effects to bring
so me of the strange r aspects of the Addams milieu to life. Visual effects
superviso r Alan Munro se rved in that sa me capacity on "Th e Addams Family."

"We needed to top everything we'd alre ady done ," says Munro. Just in
terms of Thing, Mu nro and his team utili zed 15 different puppets that do
everything from run , pull wago ns, drive a ca r, massage heads, twitch, twitte r,
and vibrate. Th e n there are a huge numbe r of optical effects required invo lvin g
Christop her Hart a nd hi s prosthetics. The most comp li cated of
Thing's effects is a skating seq ue nce, with Thing do ing acrobatics on
a roller skate. "We d id that w ith Ch ri s Hart a nd wo rked out t he
mechanics of it as we we nt a lo ng, shooting kooky ang les,"
reme mbers Munro. "It's the ultimate skateboard seq ue nce w ith a
detached hand."

Chri stoph e r Hart remembers t he origin al task of wo rking Ollt the

'characte r' of Thing: "Thing had to have hi s own we ig ht as a
cha racter, so I had to make sure that my wrist was at a ce rtai n a ngle
ove r my ha nd so t hat whe n my body was taking off it wo uld loo k
correct. And of co urse I had to consider the performance aspects -
what his personality was like and how he moved. I see Thing as a
lovable little character. He's like a little puppy dog, in t hat he likes to
play practica l jokes. He's a kid at heart, but he's also obviou sly ve ry
inte lli gent and cares about his fami ly - he's willing to put hi s life in
danger to save them."

"The great thing about this fam ily is t hey love each other not despite their
fault s, but because of t he m," says Scott Rudin . "What better way is there to
feel good abo ut ourselves and ou r sho rtco mings than by looking at a fam ily t hat
has take n those t hings t hat the rest of the world defi nes as fa il ures and in stead
ra ises t he m up a nd puts the m on a pedestal? They admire t hose peccad ill oes -
these a re the Addams famil y va lues t hey revere and protect."

ABOUT CHARLES ADDAMS

II harl es Adda ms's ecce ntric ca rtoons first a ppea re d in The New
Yorke r magaz in e in 1932, w he n he waS 2 1 years o ld. The magaz in e
was to be his publi s hing home for more than 50 yea rs, eve n during
Wo rld War 11 wh il e he was also doing a nimat io n for the Signal Corps
Photogra phic Ce nte r in New York City. The Addams Family ran from 1935
t hro ugh 1964, with so me 1300 ca rtoo ns a nd wate rco lors, incl ud ing 66 New
Yorke r covers, making up the Adda ms oeuvre. Whe n t he TV show made its
deb ut in September, 1964, The New Yorker asked t hat cha racters of the Fami ly
no lo nge r appea r in th e magazin e, and they did not reappear until 1988,
shortly before Add ams die d.

Addam s grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, the son of a naval architect.

Surrounded by Victor ian mans io ns and archa ic g raveyards, hi s im agination

the Univers ity of Pe nn sylva nia , a nd fin a lly at t he Grand Ce ntra l School of Art in
New Yo rk . His unique variation s o n domestic life and middl e -class va lu es
shattered all commo n ex pectatio ns.

In memorial of Addams, Lady Co lyto n has e nd owed in perpetu ity the

Charles Addams Memoria l Prize at the Un iversity of Pe nnsylva ni a. This
S 10,000 g rant, awa rd ed an nually at co mmence ment, is prese nted to t he
o utstandi ng graduate art student, Lady Colyto n's co mmence ment address
ca ptures the unique ele me nts of Adda ms's work:

"Charles Adda ms made a giant contribution to t he world of art. It was not

on ly his superb crafts mansh ip a nd his gen ius in the realm of humor whi ch was
uniqu e and wonderful ; but more than that , hi s work was a social co mmentary
o n an e ra: the blend ing of the s ini ster framework of in noce nt and childlike
fantasie s of our inner selves with the com mo nplace in cidents of eve ryday li fe,
thu s investing them w ith total abs urdi ty. It has been like ned to a surrea l
turnabout of a typica l American fam ily. His gift to posterity was vast. He left a
graphi c style and a comic ge nre that will always bear hi s name."
