Viktor and Rolf

The image on the left is from the Van Gogh Girls collection. The image on the right is the Black Hole collection.

Viktor and Rolf is a fashion house that specialises in creating avant-garde designs. It was
founded in 1993 by Dutch designers, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren. In 1989, Viktor and
Rolf first met at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design. Viktor and Rolf have sought to
challenge preconceptions of fashion and bridge the gap between fashion and art. Viktor and Rolf
have designed ready to wear collections, as well as haute couture. Some of their haute couture
collections are the wearable art, such as Van Gogh Girls and Vagabonds. Some of their ready to
wear collections are the Glamour Factory, Flowers, Black Hole, Stars and Stripes, and Upside
Down.

Our Design
This is a design from the spring 2010 collection.

For this project our group decided to research how fashion designers use geometry in
their designs. We looked into multiple collections and designers, but Viktor and Rolf were the
only designers that really caught our eyes. Viktor and Rolf have such a unique look on fashion
and create very intriguing collections. For our design, we based our idea off of the design above.
We began the process of creating this dress by attaching a hula hoop to a shirt in order to make
our skirt puff out. We attached bubble tool to the shirt and wrapped it around the hula hoop for
the base. We then cut strips of old bed sheets to help give the skirt more shape. Once we were
done with that we ruched the tool and started cutting the shirt. We cut a plunging geometric
sweetheart neckline in the front and used silver ribbon to create geometric straps in the back.
The Math

In order to find the puff of the dress we measured the diameter of the hula hoop and
calculated the circumference:
Diameter of Hula Hoop- 32 inches
32/2 = 16
Radius of Hula Hoop- 16 inches
𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = 2𝑐 ⋅ 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐
𝑐 = 2𝑐 ⋅ 16
𝑐 = 100.53 𝑐𝑐 32𝑐
Circumference of Hula Hoop- 100.53 inches

We then measured how far the dress went down, the width of the dress, and created a
parabola:
Length of skirt- 48 inches
Width of base of skirt-53 inches
Width of top of skirt-17 inches
1
Equation for parabola- 𝑐 = −(26.5 𝑐2 ) + 48
Limits: 0 ≤ 𝑐 ≤ 48 and −26.5 ≤ 𝑐 ≤ 26.5

This is the parabola that represents the skirt of our dress.
