Standard Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class

There are 28 students in my 7th grade class, there is one learning disabled child, and
there are 3 gifted students, and two second language learners.

Subject/Skill
Math: Pre-Algebra Combining like Terms

Objectives
Students will be able to combine like terms. They will approach this by using
everyday ideas and connecting those to terms to algebraic concepts. They will be able
to perform this with an accuracy of 80%

Procedures
Students will learn how to combine like terms, by using everyday things, and then
connect those to terms to math. Class will review definitions, concepts, and processes
of combining like terms. Teacher will ask questions to students to see what their
understanding is of combing like terms. Teacher will also use the video “Lets Write
an Expression” to show the simplicity of combing like terms.
Review Prerequisites: (We will review vocabulary from previous lesson on what
equations and expressions, terms, variables and factors, coefficient and constants.
Teacher will answer questions in connection with any of these terms.
Modeling: will demonstrate with props the simplicity of combining like terms, and
then demonstrate how to translate that into mathematical terminology. Teacher will
then show video, followed by questions from students.
Conducting Learning Probes/Guided Practice: Teacher will ask students what their
concept of combining like terms. Teacher will ask students vocabulary definitions of
terms, factors, constant, coefficient, variables. Teacher will circulate room to observe
students and to find out individual students knowledge on the subject.
Independent Student Practice: Students will be given time to complete a worksheet
containing 30 problems. For those that don’t finish will have time to finish for
homework.
Materials
The following is needed for lesson plan (pencil and eraser, video “Lets Write an
Expression”, scratch paper, handout, and textbook, props for demonstration).

Grouping Structures

All this will be done within the classroom; students will be broken down into groups
of four.

Modifications
I think students that fall into the category of learning disabled will be grouped with
students of greater abilities. That way they can help with students who are having a
harder time. Students with English language barriers will be grouped together along
with a student who is bilingual to help with comprehension.

Assessment
Teacher will assess students by asking individual students questions, while allowing
time for answers. Teacher will assign 5 questions in class to be answered by students
and graded by the students.
Students will be able to continue working on 30 question worksheet at home and will
be due next class period. The following class will begin with vocabulary review, and
problems.
