Chemistry- UNIT 1 MEASUREMENT & MATTER

MATTER PROPERTIES AND CHANGES

What is matter: matter is anything that has mass and occupies space (volume).
Ex: Kitten, tims cup, helium balloons, (not matter: energy, heat, things that are intangible
(love)).

Matter: These things have mass (can be put on a scale and measured, even if their mass is very,
very tiny.) YOU CAN GRAB IT!

Not Matter: These things cannot be put on a scale and measure; they do not occupy space.
(THOUGHTS, LOVE).

Matter has PROPERTIES:

Physical properties: Physical characteristics of a substance, can be observed or measured

without changing the substance
Ex: color, shape smell: Solubility, viscosity, malleability: (boiling point, melting point)

Chemical properties: Chemical characteristics of a substance, can only be observed by changing

the substance.
Ex: radioactive, corrosive, explosive (lighting something on fire is chemical change)

The burger is matter:

Beef patty & cheese (Physical property)
Flammable (Chemical property)
Whole wheat bun (Physical property)
Smells yummy (Physical property)
Meat changes color when it cooks (chemical property)

Physical changes: Appearance changes but substance does not change, change in state (i.e.:
solid to liquid)
Example: boiling water for your tea, breaking a pen, cutting paper

Chemical changes: substance does change, chemical reaction occurs, create a new product
(H2O -> H2 + 02)
EX: bubbles, cloudy, temperature change, color change, change in smell/taste

Add more ketchup (physical change)

Digest it (chemical change)
Remove the sesame seeds (physical change
Cook the meat a little more (chemical change)
Change of state is a physical change
Melting is a physical change: vaporization is a physical change
Making a new substance is a chemical change
Before care contains iron Fe, over time iron, reacts with oxygen o2
After: Rust forms as iron(iii) oxide F(Fe2O3)

Apple: Before (Apple) After (Reacts with o2, in the air to form brown spots

Classification of matter:
Energy cannot be created or destroyed,
Gas can be converted to thermal which converts to energy to make our car move

Matter: Pure substance and mixture

Pure subs- elements and compounds
Energy comes in different forms
Subs( Homogenous and heterogeneous )
