Section III: Course Description


This course will introduce students to fundamental computer applications, concepts
and health care informatics. It will provide students exposure to Netiquette, Online
safety, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, cloud based applications, cloud file sharing,
and ePortfolio development. Students will make extensive use of collaborative
hands-on lab activities while familiarizing themselves with some of the most popular
software applications in the industry. Students will finish the course by creating
ePortfolios to document their professional development and key competencies
throughout their studies.

Section VIII: Evaluation Notes

1. This course is designed around a hybrid concept of instruction and
will consist of 1 hour outside of the classroom and 2 hours inside.
Students will be given access to videos, notes and additional online
materials during the 1 hour outside of class time. Students will be
provided with the same files used in the demonstration videos so
that they will be able to follow along at their own pace. The 2 hour
classroom instruction will consist of a lecture, demonstration and
hands on activities followed by a lab. Student collaboration will be
encouraged.

2. Online only sections of this course will conduct all evaluation criteria
(assignments, tests and projects) online and in a time designated by
the instructor.

3. An interim mark will be determined for all first year students to


identify their academic progress. This mark will be based on the
results of Test 1 and assignments completed up to the mid-term
date.

Section XI: Course Specific Policies and Expectations


Files required for labs, out of class videos and other course-related information
will be made available to students through DC Connect.
It is the student's responsibility to complete all out of class activities assigned
in DC Connect prior to arriving in class.
Regular attendance is highly recommended. It is the student's responsibility to
notify their instructor if late or absent.

Conduct: All students are expected to act in a professional and respectful


manner at all times. Smart phones and other electronic devices may be used in
class but must be muted and cannot be a distraction for any student.

Labs: Labs will be assigned in class after the lecture and in-class activities. All
labs will be due prior to the beginning of the next class. Late labs will receive a
10% deduction per day up to 3 days late (30%) at which point the lab will not
be accepted.

Tests: All tests will be written during the scheduled times. Should this not be
possible, the student must notify the faculty within 24 hours of the scheduled
test time.

Students are expected to comply with all faculty and school specific policies
and expectations as stated in their course program material and class.
