Isoäidin Neliöstä Villatakki – Granny Square to Cardigan

Keskeltä selkää aloitettu nelikulmainen villatakki lämmittää monessa eri

muodossa. Kaksoispylväistä ja ketjusilmukoista koostuva vaate on kevyt
koostaan huolimatta, helppo muunnella ja yhdistää asuun kuin asuun.

A square cardigan started in the middle of the back warms in many different
shapes. Made with triple crochets and chain stitches, this garment is light
despite its size, easy to wear and mix with all kinds of outfits.
 Alkuvalmistelut/Lanka

Löysin kirpalta villapaidan kokoa L. Se oli hiukan haalistunut, mutta edelleen

hyväkuntoisen oloinen. Ostin sen kahdella eurolla varmistettuani, että
kappaleet oli neulottu muotoon, eikä ompeluun oltu käytetty saumuria.
Paksuhkolle, viisikerroksiselle puuvilla/akryylilangalle sopi vanha ystäväni,
nelosen koukku.

Preparations/Yarn

I found an old pullover in size L from a flea market. It was a bit faded, but
wearable still. After making sure the pieces were knit to shape, and not sewn
together with a serger, I bought it for 2 euros.
The yarn (5ply cotton/acrylic) was thick enough for my good old friend, 4mm
hook, which is size 6 in the US.
Irrotin kappaleet toisistaan, ja raksin esiin langanpään. Lanka purkuu kiharana
ja sotkeentuu helposti. Jos tahdot, voit purkaa kappaleet ja keriä langan ennen

I took the pullover apart, and found the end of yarn. I like to unravel the
pieces while crocheting. This results in curly yarn which tangles very easily. If
you like, you can unravel the pieces first, and wind the yarn.
Start from the back piece, continue to the front piece, and save the sleeves for
crocheting sleeves. This way, you won't have to wonder if you have enough
yarn.

Virkkaa viisi ketjusilmukkaa, ja yhdistä ne renkaaksi piilosilmukalla.

Chain five, and join them into a ring with a slip stitch.

Virkkaa renkaaseen neljä ketjusilmukkaa ja kaksi kaksoispylvästä. Tämän

jälkeen kolme ketjusilmukkaa, kolme kaksoispylvästä, kolme ketjusilmukkaa,
kolme kaksoispylvästä, kolme ketjusilmukkaa, kolme kaksoispylvästä ja vielä
kerran kolme ketjusilmukkaa. Sulje kerros piilosilmukalla ensimmäiseen neljän

Into the ring, chain four (which counts as the first triple crochet), triple crochet
two times, chain three, triple crochet three times, chain three, triple crochet
three times, chain three, triple crochet three times, chain three, and join to the
first triple crochet with a slip stitch. We end up with four groups of three triple
crochets joined by chain stitches.
This is the standard start for a granny square.

Nouse neliöstä viidellä ketjusilmukalla, ja virkkaa seuraaviin pylväisiin

kaksoispylväs ja ketjusilmukka. Kulman kolmeen ketjusilmukkaan virkataan
kaksi kolmoispylvästä jotta kulmat eivät valmiina kinnaa, kolme
ketjusilmukkaa, kaksi kolmoispylvästä ja ketjusilmukka. Seuraaviin pylväisiin
taas kuhunkin kaksoispylväs ja ketjusilmukka, kunnes päästään seuraavaan
kulmaan jossa toimitaan edellä kuvatulla tavalla.

Rise from the square with five chain stitches. Into the following triple crochets,
triple crochet and chain stitch. When you reach the corner's three chain
stitches, quadruple crochet twice (this so the finished corners won't gnash),
chain three, quadruple crochet twice and chain stitch into the corner. Continue
with a triple crochet and chain stitch into each triple crochet. When you reach
the next corner, repeat the first corner.
Close the row with a slip stitch into the first triple crochet, acted by the five
chain stitches we started the row with.

Seuraava kerros on samanlainen, aloituskohta vain muuttaa lopuksi mystisesti

The next row goes the same way, all that happens is that the starting point
mysteriously moves to the middle of the row. During the next rows (which are
all identical) you'll have more to crochet with each one. Every triple crochet
gets a triple crochet and a chain stitch, and the corners are guarded by two
groups of two quadruple crochets separated by three chain stitches.
Continue like this until the piece is as wide as your back.
For crocheting movies, I recommend Practical Magic, Stardust, and the LOTR-
trilogy.
 Kun neliö on selkäsi levyinen, on aika jättää aukot käsiä varten. Mallitakki

When the square is as wide as your back, it's time to leave gaps for the arms.
My coat reached the desired width at row nine.

The gaps won't be centered: the hem should be longer than the collar. Put the
first pair of markers in two triple crochets after the corner. The other pair is put
in fifteen triple crochets lower. These fifteen are left un-crocheted during the
next row, and replaced with thirty chain stitches.

Start the row just like the others before it. Crochet through the corner, and the
triple crochets following until you reach the first marker. Chain thirty, and
continue at the next marker like nothing had happened.
Repeat on the other side.
At the end of the row, double check to make sure the gaps are symmetrical
and even. Try the coat on at this point. The sleeve gaps and the back shouldn't
feel tight. If the coat doesn't feel comfortable, do the gaps again with a couple
of triple crochets more skipped.

Then just continue until you run out of yarn, and it is time to start the sleeves.

The sleeves are crocheted in the round. We'll start by attaching the yarn to the
bottom edge of the sleeve gap with a single crochet, and rising out with five
chain stitches.
I apologize for the different looking photos: I moved during the making of this
coat, and couldn't find my usual background fabric.

On both ends of the sleeve gap, there's one triple crochet lying on its side.
Triple crochet once in the middle of it. Push your hook through two layers of
yarn on the triple crochet: this way, you won't end up with a hole in the work.

Triple crochet and chain stitch into each triple crochet, just like in the bodice of
the coat. At the other end of the gap, triple crochet once into the triple crochet
lying on its side.
Jatka kerros loppuun, ja sulje piilosilmukalla. Seuraavalle kerrokselle noustaan
viidellä ketjusilmukalla. Jatka kunnes hiha on riittävän pitkä, ja virkkaa toinen

Continue to the end of the row, and close with a slip stitch. Start the next row
with five chain stitches. Continue until the sleeve is long enough, and crochet
the other sleeve like the first one. For my coat, I crocheted thirty-five rows for
the sleeves.

Valmiin takin helma valuu epäsymmetrisenä, etukulmistaan pidempänä kuin

If you have yarn left over after making the sleeves, continue the edges of the
coat with it. This model cannot be too big.
The hem of the finished coat is asymmetric, longer in the front corners than in
the back. The large collar can be worn in many ways: you can raise it to double
as a hood, wrap it around your neck, or lower to the shoulders like a shawl. On
cool autumn nights, the coat brings warmth outside, and during the winter it'll
hug you like portable blanket. Crocheting the coat is simple and tedious, but
the finished garment is well worth the work.
It took me seven nights to crochet my coat. As an extra reward, I got a
respectable blister on my thumb.
 Katsotaan vielä niksi langan solmimiseen.
Paksu lanka tekee paksun solmun, mikä on kevyessä vaatteessa jokseenkin
ikävän näköistä. Helpommin piilotettavan mutta silti kestävän liitoskohdan
saat, kun solmit jokaisen langan kerroksen erikseen. Viisi pientä solmua saa
piiloon paljon helpommin kuin yhden ison.

Let's look at how to continue the yarn. A thick yarn makes a thick knot, which
doesn't look very nice on a light garment. Instead of tying the whole yarn, tie
each layer together separately. It's far easier to hide five small knots than one
big knot.
