TINPLATE

Figure: tin plate

Tinplate are produced from low carbon steel or black plate which both side of black plate are
coated with thin layer of tin. The coating is done by dipping the sheets of steel in molten tin or
by the electrodeposition of tin on the steel sheet which the almost all tinplate is now produced
by electrodeposition. In electrodeposition, the central core is strip steel which is cleaned in a
pickling solution and then fed through tanks containing electrolyte, where tin is deposited on
both sides. As the strip passes between high-frequency electric induction coils, tin coating melts
and flows to form a lustrous coat. End products will have a tin coating of about 0.00003 inch
on each side.
It have been used for preserving the food for well over a hundred years. Tinplate has
the strength and formability of steel combined with noncorrosive and nontoxic properties of
tin. It also provide longest shelf life with minimum of 2 years, making it the most dependable

and robust packaging medium with power to resist insects, germs, bacteria and even ultraviolet
light which helps protect the natural flavours, aroma and also the appearance of the food. In
