Water-reuse data were calculated relative to total municipal wastewater produced’, while water risk was reported by the World Resources Institute (WRI) using the most recent data available. The WRI framework uses an aggregated score of 12 key water indicators (including 7 indicators of quantity ~ baseline , seasonal variability, flood occurrence, drought severity, upstream storage, and groundwater stress; 2 indicators of quality ~ return flow ratio and upstream protected land; and 3 indicators of regulatory and reputational risk ~ media coverage, access to water, and threatened amphibians) to calculate water risk”. The data were assessed to quantify the correlation between water risk and water reuse using GraphPad Prism software (a= 0.05). The D* Agostino and Pearson omnibus normality test was used to verify normality of the dataset, followed by correlation analysis using the Pearson correlation statistic, ‘This demonstrated a significant correlation between the data (p = 0.0005). The same approach was used to assess water reuse in comparison to economics (gross national income [GNI] per capita)’, human development index (HDI)’, and education (expected years of schooling)’. No significant correlation was found between water reuse and these parameters (p = 0.5883, 0.6536, 0.1248, respectively). The HDI and GNVcapita datasets exhibited non-normal distributions, and were thus assessed using the Spearman correlation statistic rather than Pearson s2 34 35 56 57 58 59 60 61 62 63 65 66 67 68 69 Water Reute (% relative to munlepal wastewater produced) 100% Isat oun ss 106 com Kazakstan Sau Andi sor ar, soe South fica ae Sym AMD RembIE Sng Jordan Nenibia 30% ° on Tonia Kuwait] on “shan Ma Me Spin Paestiney 8 ep beoteiepemet el Nae id INE seein i ‘ove *burkina Faso Bras, © SPoland useyel ni Pow, Laser te ee ee eS le mae ne on ee Water Risk Figure $1 ~The extent of municipal wastewater reuse in relation to national water risks illustrates a clear trend that countries experiencing higher water risks are increasingly implementing water reuse strategies to augment available resources, References FAO.
