How to Make Ethanol

This technical manual outlines the BASIC steps to creating ethanol, with the process shortened

for time and understandability. For further information on how to create and/or manufacture

ethanol, there is an OSHA Safety Manual, Section 4, Chapter 5, about Ethanol.

Materials needed:

Ethanol Plant

Corn and other feed products

Step 1 Once you’ve cleaned your corn kernels, it’s

time for milling. Once the corn is milled, it
turns into milled corn flour ready to be dry
steamed for liquefaction. After liquefaction, it
creates a slurry, nasty looking, yellow liquid.
This liquid is corn mash. This liquid is how
ethanol is made.

Step 2 Add the corn mash to the fermentation tanks

along with yeast, which produce ethanol and
carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Step 3 Denature the ethanol. Denaturing the ethanol

makes the ethanol not safe for human
consumption. This is done by adding other
chemicals like diluted sulfuric acid to the
storage tanks.
