History:
● The Olmecs came to the region in 2000 B.C., followed by
the Maya in 1500 B.C.
● When the Maya civilization ended in 900 A.D., the Toltec
Empire took hold in El Salvador.
● In the 11th century, the Pipil people became the dominant
group in El Salvador until the Spanish conquerors landed.
● The Spanish took over in 1528 and forced the native people
to become servants. El Salvador achieved independence
from SPAIN in 1821 and full independence in 1841.

CULTURE
Music and Clothes:

● Women dress in colorful embroidered shirts and skirts, and
men wear traditional pants and embroidered shirts.
● Women often wear cotton head scarves and shawls with
dresses or skirts and tops paired with sandals. Men wear
cotton suits or shirts with jeans and a cowboy hat.
Traditional footwear for men consists of boots or sandals.

Food:
● The traditional dish of El Salvador is the Pupusa, which can
be found everywhere, being made in homes and sold in
cafes, restaurants, by street vendors and in the Pupusarias.
You can fill them with chillies, cheese (queso), beans
(frijoles), loroco (a green flower blossom), shrimp
(camarones), pork (chicharron), chicken (pollo), and fish
(pescado).
● Coffee, sugar, corn, rice, shrimp, and beef are the main
agricultural products in El Salvador.
