The match, though, didn’t bring much joy to Dhoni as his team suffered an
eight-wicket loss at the hands of Mumbai Indians. Batting first, CSK
posted 169/5 with Dhoni contributing a 21-ball 26. Mumbai managed to
overhaul the target thanks to a fine half-century by skipper Rohit Sharma
with two balls to spare.
Despite the unfavourable outcome, CSK remain atop the point’s table with
five wins from seven matches in the ongoing IPL. Dhoni himself has been
in terrific form with the bat scoring 235 runs at an impressive average of
58.75 and an equally impressive strike rate of 159.86.
Regarded as one of the best captains India has ever produced, Dhoni holds
the record for being the first and only captain to win all three ICC events.
Under his leadership, India lifted the T20 World Championship in 2007 in
South Africa and clinched the ODI World Cup crown in 2011 on home
soil. He completed the treble by leading India to title triumph in the ICC
Champions Trophy in England in 2013.
The 36-year-old has managed to achieve the similar kind of success as the
leader of CSK since the inception of the IPL in 2008. Under his captaincy,
CSK became one of the most successful IPL teams, winning the cash-rich
league twice in 2010 and 2011 besides claiming top honours in now
defunct Champions League in 2010 and 2014.
