Scene 1

INT Black screen. Shot of a chair and a table in a dark room,

warmly lit from the side of the camera, casting harsh shadows.
It is silent. Camera is slowly moving towards the chair.
Suddenly a loud bang is heard as a door swings open. 2 men
enter as well as Luke, who has a bag over his head. They
slowly walk over towards the table and chair. Luke drops onto
the chair, still with the bag over his head and his hands
tied.

Silence. ‘DOWN VOTE’ appears on screen.

Scene 2

INT Bedroom with white walls and no pictures on wall.

Luke wakes up in bed. POV shots of GUI. It reads ’Good morning
Luke’. He sits up and flicks through news feeds and weather.
He gets a call from Holly and answers it.
Luke

(Tired)

Hey Holly.

Holly

Sup Luke. How you feeling?

Luke

Tired. What happened last night?

Holly

Not a clue, I can’t remember a thing.

Luke

So what are you up to today?

Holly

Not sure. My parents are mad as hell cos I didn’t get home
until 3.

Luke

Really? Bloody hell. How’s your countdown doing?

Holly

(Laughing)

Went down 7 months over night.

Luke

(Laughing)

You probably shouldn’t have done those shots then.

Holly

Yeah true. Right well I should probably go, gotta be out the
house in 20 minutes.
Luke

Alright, see you later.

The call ends.

Scene 3

INT Luke is in the kitchen, making breakfast. He is also

flicking through pictures of the night before on his phone. In
the background the radio is playing the news.

Radio Presenter

…As more people are getting their countdowns hacked, causing

the government to work faster than ever to stop this issue.
Onto other news, the short film Extremity has made over 7
million…

Scene 4

EXT Luke is walking down an alleyway with some shopping.

He is looking at his phone, not looking where he is going. He
turns a corner, walking into someone.

Man

Watch it bro.

Luke

Sorry.
The man gets out his phone and presses the down arrow. A
low pitched noise is heard. Luke looks at his phone,
showing his countdown change from ‘58 years, 11 months’
to ’58 years, 10 months’. The man turns and continues
walking. As he is walking off, Luke votes him down. The same
low-pitched noise is heard. The man stops, pauses, then turns
back to Luke.

Man

What did you just do?

Luke

Huh?

Man

Did you just down vote me?

Luke

Yeah…

The man walks closer to Luke.

Luke

I think you better stay where you are.

Man

And whys that?

Luke

Look.

Luke nods to a CCTV camera, watching the two.

Man

You’re lucky the cameras here to save you.

The man turns and walks off. Luke waits in the alleyway for a
bit before continuing. As he is walking, a hooded figure turns
into the alleyway and begins to walk towards him. Luke
does not notice this man as he is on his phone. The man
continues to walk towards him but his face cannot be
seen, building tension. The man goes to hit Luke round
the head but before the impact, the screen cuts to black.

Scene 5

INT Back of car.

Luke is lying against the side of the car. His vision is

blurry. His hands are tied behind his back. The car is moving.
He tries to get his hands out of the rope. The car suddenly
stops.

Scene 6

INT Dark room.

Shot of a chair and a table in a dark room, warmly lit from

the side of the camera, casting harsh shadows. It is silent.
Camera is slowly moving towards the chair. Suddenly a loud
bang is heard as a door swings open. 2 men enter as well as
Luke, who has a bag over his head. They slowly walk over
towards the table and chair. Luke drops onto the chair, still
with the bag over his head and his hands tied. The bag is
lifted off of Luke’s head.

Luke

(Gasping for breath)

He looks up at the harsh lights and tries to block them. The

door opens behind him. Shots of feet walking towards the
chair. He stops and looks at Luke. He is wearing a suit.
Luke is sweating.

Business Man

Mr Jones?

Luke

Yeah?

Business Man

I’m glad we could finally meet. My men have been watching you.

Luke

Your men?

There is a tense pause of the man looking at Luke. He turns

and pulls up a chair to the other side of the table. He sits,
opposite Luke. There is another pause.

Business Man

No hard feelings about that by the way.

Luke

What do you want?

Business Man

Me? What do I want? I want lots of things.

There is a pause. He then leans in.

Business Man

But there is one thing I want in particular.

Luke
What’s that?

Business Man

Charles Ainsley. Dead.

Luke

The creator of the countdown?

Pause.

Luke

Why come to me?

Business Man

You do work for him don’t you?

Luke

Well yeah but…

Business Man

But what?

Luke

I can’t kill a man.

Business Man

Why not?

Luke

Well, my countdown will be set straight to zero if I’m caught.

Business Man

You better not get caught then.

Pause.

Luke
Why should I?

The man leans in closer.

Business Man

I don’t think you have a choice.

The man leans out again. Luke looks confused. The man reaches
into his jacket and pulls out a small gun. Luke starts to
struggle in his chair. He then gives up.

Business Man

So Luke, what’s your ID number.

There is a pause.

Business Man

Oh I’m sorry, did you not hear me?

Luke

738041

One of the men in the background types it into a laptop and

hits enter. On Luke’s POV, a friend request pops up from
‘UNKNOWN’.

Business Man

Accept it.

Luke accepts it.

Business Man

Ok. From now on, we see what you see. We will be able to
message you. From now on, you do exactly what we say.

There is a pause.

Business Man
If not, your countdown will be set to zero.

Luke

You’re those hacker guys?

The man does not reply. The man speaks to the other men in the
room.

Business Man

Get him out of here.

The men walk over to Luke and put a bag over his head and it
cuts to black.

Scene 7

INT Luke’s bedroom. He is lying there. The scene is lit with

blue light. He climbs to his feet and walks over to the
window. He looks down at his phone and the countdown reads ’58
years, 10 months’. He looks up again and looks out of the
window. His phone makes a text noise. He looks down.

UNKNOWN – You have been activated.

Luke looks worried. He looks back at his phone.

LUKE – What do I have to do?

There is an uneasy pause.

UNKNOWN – Answer the door.

Luke looks up and is confused. The doorbell rings. He looks

worried. He receives another text.

UNKNOWN – Now.
He walks downstairs and opens the door. On the floor is a
box. He picks it up and looks out of the door before
shutting it. He goes back on his phone.

LUKE – What is this?

UNKNOWN – Open it.

He pauses for a second before opening it. Inside the box is

bubble wrap. Luke takes out the bubble wrap and unwraps it,
revealing a knife. There is a pause. He goes back to his
phone.

LUKE – What’s this?

UNKNOWN – Your weapon.

Luke starts to panic. He starts trying to breathe to control

his panicking. After calming down, he responds.

LUKE – When will I need to use it?

UNKNOWN – Tonight at 9pm.

LUKE – Why then?

UKNOWN – It’s Charles Ainsley’s birthday. There will be a

party at his house.

UNKNOWN – You will go there.

There is a ring at the door. Luke goes to answer it. Holly is

at the door.

Holly

Hey Luke

Luke

Oh hey holly what’s up?
