On March 3, 2009, the then president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, during a tour of the Middle
East and Asia to increase oil prices, raised the idea of creating an international currency called
Petro that was backed mainly by the oil reserves of some OPEC member countries and
criticized the US break with respect to the gold standard.2 13 14 In April 2016, a gold-backed
cryptocurrency was issued: DigixDAO.15 16 17 In September 2017 , Wilmar Castro Soteldo,
Minister of Agriculture and Lands of Venezuela, supported the creation of state digital
currencies that were based on the gold standard or other resources of the various countries of
the world to "preserve the integrity of humanity", rescue the economy Venezuela and ending
the hegemony of the US dollar.18 19 20
