2/28/18 Assignment #2
Field Experience 1

Ohio Standard 3
Teachers understand and use varied assessments to inform instruction, evaluate, and ensure
student learning.

Element B
Teachers select, develop and use a variety of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments.

Competency #23
Field student has assisted in collecting, correcting, grading, and recording grades.

This standard, element, and competency all relate to how teachers use different forms of
assessment to measure how the student is learning. Teachers need to check the students’
understanding of the material to help them know what they need to improve in their teaching.
Assessments are a key component in the education environment and assessments can help
measure student achievement and skill mastery. In this field experience, I graded numerous
papers, including homework, quizzes, and tests in the areas of math and spelling. I discussed
with my cooperating teacher the students that mastered the material and the students that
struggled with the material, who need a little more work and help on it. My cooperating teacher
had me correct the work, record the grades, and return the assignments into the students’
mailbox. I have found that assessments can be extremely valuable. Not only do assessments
give you a measure on how the student is learning, but they can also help a teacher determine
what instructional approaches are best for the students and what material needs to be retaught.
