· Students will create a journal entry on their thoughts of expressing their opinions and views within
their community.
Procedure:
1. Students will be given a couple of images of protests and speakers in various times and will be asked
to write in their daybook on what they think of these images.
2. The teacher will then provide a video of a famous civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr., for the
students to watch. While watching, students will be asked to write down current societal problems in
today’s community that they can think of.
3. After the video, the teacher will ask students to talk about some of the societal debates they thought
about while watching the video. The teacher will write these topics on the board as the students share
their ideas.
4. Students will then be asked to think about these problems and arguments that have been discussed and
ponder why it is/is not important to speak about them in society. This response will be done in their
daybook. Students who would like to share their responses to the class are allowed to.
5. Overview/Wrap up: for students, what is the point of this discussion today? Where will they be
