CATALOG DESCRIPTION
In this course, you will learn general methods for both playing and teaching many of the main
instruments in the percussion world. These instruments include (but are not limited to)
marimba, snare drum, timpani, and some small accessories such as the triangle, tambourine,
and wood block.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES / ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OUTCOMES


Students will be able to:
 Perform small etudes on the snare drum, marimba, triangle, and tambourine
(wood block and timpani are saved for the end of the course if we get through
the other instruments in a timely fashion).
 Teach the general techniques on the instruments that we cover in class.
 Repair any of the instruments we discuss if (and more likely, when) they break.
 These will be assessed through both written and playing exams given by the
instructor and assistants throughout the semester (dates for written and playing
exams are listed in the semester outline).
INSTRUCTOR’S EXPECTATIONS
Come to class fully functioning (this includes getting a full night’s rest and doing your best to
not be hungover or anything of the sort). Come prepared with the ability to take notes (laptops
and tablets are accepted for note taking). Be ready to have fun!

GRADING PROCEDURE / ASSIGNMENTS / EXAMS / FINAL EXAM

Grade Percentages:
 Attendance = 10%
 Attitude = 10%
 Class Preparedness = 10%
 Owning the required texts = 20%
 Written/Playing Exams = 30%
 Final Exam = 20%
Grading Scale:
Bad Attendance (meaning 3 – 4 unexcused absences)
100-90 = A
89-80 = B
79-70 = C
69-60 = D
59 - 0 = E

Good Attendance (meaning 2 or less unexcused absences)


85+ = A
84 - 74 = B
73 - 63 = C
62 - 52 = D
51 or below = E

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance to this class is mandatory, with two (2) unexcused absences available for you
throughout the semester. After two unexcused absences, your grade will be lowered by one
half of a letter grade. Students with five (5) or more unexcused absences will receive a zero (0)
for the course and will have to retake the course at a later date.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Illegal: firearms or any other weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, and drug related items
Food, drinks other than water, tobacco products, and spit-cups are not permitted. Mobile
devices must be placed on “silent” and stowed. Behavior that disrupt the learning environment
is strictly forbidden.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
The University policy regarding academic dishonesty is stated in the Undergraduate Catalog. It
allows faculty members to impose a sanction on students determined to be guilty of plagiarism
(taking the ideas or written words of another without appropriate citation). The sanction may
include failure of a particular assignment or exam, failure of a particular class, or any other
appropriate disciplinary action. Charges of plagiarism must be reported to the appropriate
department chair and college dean, and to the MSU Dean of Students. Further policy

Unit 2 - Tambourine
