Writing Prompt #4
Giving someone a name is a very special thing for every party involved. Families will
name their children names that have been passed down for generations. Names can also be
related to a religious figure which would create symbolism for that name. I know that originally
my mom wanted to name me Willow so that my sisters and I would all have double flower
names since our last name is Rose. My dad was against this because he thought it would make
him look like a hippie which is how I ended up with the name Selina. This brings about another
important feature of names, the spelling. Many people may have the same name as someone but
they could be spelled differently. My name is unique because most of the time there are to “e’s”
in my name. My mom also did this with my two other sisters, Jasmine and Lilee. Along with the
first name some people also have a middle name. Some cultures or families do not give their
children middle names for a variety of reasons. My middle name is Raquel because it is also my
mom’s middle name. She decided to give me her middle name since I was born on her thirtieth
birthday. Other middle names can be inspired by other family members or other influential
things in life. For example, my oldest sister made her son’s middle name Hemingway because
Ernest Hemingway is her favorite author and he has impacted her life greatly. Finally, I think
that last names can in some ways be the most important part of someone’s name. People’s last
names can be passed down through hundreds of generations which creates history and is a major
factor in how we look at our ancestries today. A person’s name can define their life and can even
influence their personality. Names form relationships and help build lives for everyone. Without
