Selina Rose

UWRT 1103-017
Writing Prompt #4

Giving someone a name is a very special thing for every party involved. Families will

name their children names that have been passed down for generations. Names can also be

related to a religious figure which would create symbolism for that name. I know that originally

my mom wanted to name me Willow so that my sisters and I would all have double flower

names since our last name is Rose. My dad was against this because he thought it would make

him look like a hippie which is how I ended up with the name Selina. This brings about another

important feature of names, the spelling. Many people may have the same name as someone but

they could be spelled differently. My name is unique because most of the time there are to “e’s”

in my name. My mom also did this with my two other sisters, Jasmine and Lilee. Along with the

first name some people also have a middle name. Some cultures or families do not give their

children middle names for a variety of reasons. My middle name is Raquel because it is also my

mom’s middle name. She decided to give me her middle name since I was born on her thirtieth

birthday. Other middle names can be inspired by other family members or other influential

things in life. For example, my oldest sister made her son’s middle name Hemingway because

Ernest Hemingway is her favorite author and he has impacted her life greatly. Finally, I think

that last names can in some ways be the most important part of someone’s name. People’s last

names can be passed down through hundreds of generations which creates history and is a major

factor in how we look at our ancestries today. A person’s name can define their life and can even

influence their personality. Names form relationships and help build lives for everyone. Without

names we would be an emotionless species.
