Pam and Julie Case Study

Pam and Julie worked at J & J’s Supermarket. Pam has worked there since 2007. Julie has worked there since 2010. Randy, their
manager, has a position open for head cashier making two dollars more an hour. He knows he is expected to give the job to Pam, who
has been working there for more years and is seldom late, even though she is out “sick” frequently. However, Julie—who has fewer
years’ experience—is always on time and is almost never absent.

1. What would you do if you were Randy?

If I was Randy I would give the job to Pam considering it would be a head job, which I think should be the person with more experience.
Julie sounds like a good employee but you don’t want to make the mistake of giving someone the head position when they don’t have
all the experience the person before them does.

2. How should Julie feel if Pam gets the job?

Julie should feel happy for Pam because she has been there longer than she has. If I was here I would feel frustrated but at the same
time I would understand that someone with more experience than me should have the job.

3. How should Pam feel if Julie gets the job?

Pam should be a little upset because she has been with the company longer and knows more. She would have to show good
character so her boss doesn’t think she is incapable of being a good co-worker.
