Mathematical modeling of iron ore sintering process

The study involves the development of a 1-Dimensional unsteady-state mathematical model to describe
the various physico-chemical phenomena during sintering of iron ore in a pot-sintering equipment. This
should allow us to understand the underlying phenomena and the effect of process parameters on these.

The process involves gas flow through a heterogeneous packed bed, heat and mass transfer, travel of a
combustion front, drying and condensation of moisture, melting and solidification, dissolution of
compounds in the liquid phase and subsequent precipitation of phase and phase transformations. Each of
these would need sub-models to establish relationships between the parameters involved. The overall
model should be able predict the temperature and pressure profiles, moisture travel, sintering rates, etc.
