HOW TO ANALYSE A MOVING IMAGE

When analysing a moving image you are expected to know about;

 Camera work
 Editing
 Sound
 Mise-en-scene

Camera work

 Establishing shot – shows location

 Long shot – filming people far away
 Mid shot
 Close up
 Extreme close up
 Panning – like panorama
 Tilt shot – up and down
 Tracking shot – camera moves or follows

Editing

 Continuity editing – designed to make the action look continuous.

 Match on action – film a hand, film a door handle then film someone opening door.
 Eyeline match – filming from person to another to appear as if they’re looking at it.
 Shot reverse shot – during conversation, each side is filmed separately and then edited
together.
 180 rule – do not make angle 180 unless panning audiences perspective is completely
flipped.
 Cross cutting – when you film 2 events and edit them together e.g. police car driving and
robbery (can be filmed ages apart, makes action easier to film).
