Standard 1 a, b, ¢, de, fg Mr. Heemstra progress monitors his student's progress from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. This progress is shared with students and parents. For those students fortunate to have Mr. Heemstra for all of their elementary years the document progress of each student is impressive, Mr. Heemstra’s PE classroom is always safe. and students are taught respect, responsibility, faimess, and sportsmanship skills that they will be able to use their whole life. STANDARD: Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching profession. The Teacher: 2. Understends and uses instructional strategies that are appropriate to the content area Standard 2 a, b, d This was day one of jump roping for second graders. Mr. Heemstra broke down all the steps needed for students to make progress on their jump roping skills. He demonstrated, let them try, gave feedback, and then modified the task into even simpler steps so students could make progress of learning how to jump rope. STANDARD: Demonstrates competence in planning and preparing for instruction. The Teacher: a, Uses student achievement data, local standards and the district curriculum in planning for instruction, b. Sets and communicates high expectations for social, behavioral, and academic suecess for all students c. Uses student development needs, background, and interests in planning for instruction. 4, Selects strategies to engage all students in learning, © Uses available resources, including technologies, in the development and sequencing of instruction. Standard a, b, ¢,d All students were very involved in the lesson and engaged. High expectations for behavior ‘was maintained throughout the entire lesson time and this also made the gym a safe classroom. The Teacher: 4. Aligns classroom instruction with local standards and district curriculum. Uses research-based instructional strategies that address the full range of cognitive levels. c. Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness in adjusting instruction to meet student needs. cd. Engages students in varied experiences that meet diverse needs and promote social, ‘emotional, and academic growth, €. Connects students’ prior knowledge, life experiences, and interests in the instructional process, £ Uses available resources, ineluding technologies, in the delivery of instruction, Standard 4 a, b, ¢, d, e, The abilities of the students varied greatly. Mr. Heemstra was able to modify the task so students were able to practice and perform at their instructional level. Students participated ina variety of activities that all were geared toward the objective of becoming better jump ropers. Students were determined and believed in the concept, “Practice Makes Better’. Mr. Heemstra gave instruction as need and moved throughout the gym area. He demonstrated great patience with some of the students lack of understanding and being able to understand frontward and backwards. Provides substantive, timely, and constructive feedback to students and parents. Works with other saff and building and district leadership in analysis of student progress. Standard 5 b, de Mr. Heemstra gave the students constant feedback and modified instruction so all students could be successful.
