Causes: Why the Battle Happened
● Sioux and Cheyenne Indians left their
reservations because whites had been
encroaching on their sacred land, the black
hills. The government did nothing to protect
the land
● The Indians gathered in Montana with the
great warrior sitting bull
● The U.S. army, including Custer and the 7th
cavalry were dispatched to deal with the
Indians.
Effects: Outcomes influences
● Native American victory = Custer’s death → redraw of Black Hill boundaries
● U.S. Army increased # of soldiers in area to “crush” Native Americans
● Vengeful methods by soldiers and officials were taken to destroy Native spirit
● Campaign of 1876 → US effort for Sioux tribe to reservations
