The Cultural Biography Of Adeline Flores- Acevedo

Name

The name given to me at birth was Adeline Flores-Acevedo. My name was originally

going to be Adela which is my grandmother’s name, but due to a language barrier between the

nurse, and my mother the nurse ended up giving me my name. In high school I was called Addie

for short. I am now married, but I have decided to keep my maiden name, no specific reason just

a personal choice.

Culture

My mother is from El Salvador, and my father is from Mexico. I identify as second

generation Hispanic. I have implemented some of my parent’s customs to my own, for example

the cooking, music, and holidays as well as the language which is Spanish.

Religion

My mother is Christian, but I was baptized Catholic. I never committed myself to any

religion, and I still do not identify with any religion, but I do believe in God. My family did not

believe in implementing a religion on my siblings and I, despite being baptized under the

catholic church. Instead my parents believed that once we were of age we could choose for

ourselves.

Family Structure

The first five years of my life I grew up in a single parent household. My mother then

met my father (step-dad) , so our family structure changed into a blended family which then
turned me from an only child to the oldest of my siblings. My current family structure is also

blended both my husband and I came into our marriage with a child of our own.

Socio-Economic Status

My mother was a housekeeper, and my father was a construction worker growing up. My

household would be considered lower income growing up. Regardless, of our income my parents

were able to purchase a car and a vehicle. I started working at 16 to be able to provide for

myself. I was able to attend school the first year of college with a scholarship, but stopped

school. I am currently middle class due to my current income.

Geographic Area/ Language

I was born in Los Angeles, California, but moved to Las Vegas when I was 3. My first

language was Spanish and my second was English. Although I love Spanish I was unable to

teach my first born Spanish, but with my daughter I am implementing both languages already she

is currently 2 years old.
