Chapter V Instrument Main Function

Anyscan-36 with compact design in superb performance and powerful function, not only
suitable for large flowability and high overhand weld inspection operation, but also can be
used in forging, aircrafts parts and other high sensibility and resolution ultrasonic testing.
This chapter focus on introducing characteristics of instrument’s function.

5.1 Constraints Between the Detection Range and PRF

Parameters “Range”, “Velocity” and “PRF” have close constraint relations with each other:
while “Range” is large and “Velocity” is lower, the “PRF” must be reduced accordingly. We
limited and automatically switched the relationship among them according to table 2
“Appendix 2”, no need to change if not necessary.

But considering some unknown echo needs to be judged by reducing repetition frequency
under forging detection, it is still in the main menu under the "PLSRCVR" main-menu with
the “PRF”.

The choice of “PRF” range from 40~1000HZ in 40/250/1000 optional, default value 250HZ
according to 250mm “Range” .

While “PRF” setting is beyond the restrict in table 2 of Appendix 2,system will respond with
red words as a clue, at that time, follow the screen tips.

5.2 Square-wave Emission and Damping, Band’s Setting

5.2.1 Square-wave Emission

Anyscan-36 adopt with high speed negative square-wave transmit model, pulse amplitude
about 400v, front fall time about 5ns, width adjustable between 40~500ns, it can fully meet
with the different requirement of various probes.

In view of the characteristics of the spectral distribution of the square wave pulse ,frontier
steeper square wave pulse suitable for 2 ~ 5MHz probe flaw detection applications, it’s the
main reason for using square-wave emission in weld and forging parts inspection.

This instrument with pulse width auto adjust function for convenience of on-site
applications, enter the nominal frequency first at “TYPE SPEC” of PROBE menu, the
pulse width will auto change to accordingly value in “Square-wave emission”. For example:
enter the probe frequency as 2.5MHZ, pulse width auto changed to 200ns, enter the
probe frequency as 5MHZ,pulse width auto changed to 100ns;while probe
frequency≥10MHz,pulse width as 50ns.Just slightly check in initial use.

  21

Square-wave emission of Anyscan-36 is different from those instruments which use

square-wave’s frontier and lagging edge for secondary excitation, A-36 doesn’t exist
secondary excitation and echo phase shift problems, thus its echo with flaw echo
spectrum feature information, convenience for further study.

Although the transmit system of ultrasonic flaw detector and probe won’t be included in
the scope of "power transfer" and pay attention to the match, but the square-wave
transmitter circuit load capacity is still a very important indicator, so “the effective output
impedance of transmitter circuit” be used in so many standards(same in spike pulse
transmit system). Anyscan-36’s effective output impedance approximately 10Ω, load
capacity is quite strong; For example: The transmit pulse amplitude remains ≥ 300V while
connect with 2.5P20N probe (the impedance approximately 50Ω),with much highly
sensitivity in flaw detection.

5.2.2 The Damping and Band Mix

“Damping” of the instrument in “50/100/200/500Ω” four different gear.

The receive system of Anyscan-36 adopt with a new design of high gain, wideband and
low noise amplifier, divided into 1~6/0.5~22/3~22 three different gear according to
different requirement. The -3dB band width≥20MHz in 0.5 ~ 22 and 3 ~ 22 MHz two
wideband gears, it can be totally used in high sensitivity inspections with narrow pulse
probe under 20 MHz.

The following is the instrument conventional application of recommended settings:

(1)Equipped with 1 ~ 5MHz probe for general welds and forgings testing, should set
"band = 1 ~~ 6MHz, damping = 200Ω (square wave pulse width is adjusted
automatically by the instrument). This setup can get higher detection sensitivity and
adequate resolution; penetrating for strengthening the damping is set to "500Ω",
improve detection sensitivity and resolution decreased slightly.
(2)Equipped with 5 ~ 10MHz narrow pulse probe for detect inside and near surface thin
flaws at the same time, should set "band = 0.5 ~ 22MHz, damping = 100Ω (square
wave pulse width adjusted automatically by the instrument.). This setup can obtain
high sensitivity and near zone and far zone resolution.
(3)Equipped with 10 ~ 20MHz probe narrow pulse probe for high resolution inspection,
should set "band = 3 ~ 22MHz, damping = 50Ω (square wave pulse width adjusted
automatically by the instrument.). This setup can get very high resolution, and when
necessary, according to the echo of the probe, add with “rectify
wave=negative”(menu of PLSRCVR) for further high resolution improvement.
Noticement of instrument setting about high frequency narrow pulse probe, see 6.5.

5.3 Gate Function and Its Setting

Anyscan-36 with basically the same function of the two gates, in addition to the normal

  22

functions of the alarm, echo distance and amplitude measurements, they also increase “A
magnify” and “B magnify” functions, which provide a convenient conditions for further
expansion of application.

5.3.1 Gate Basic Function

(1)Gate A / B can be set "Positive (Echo) or negative (loss wave)" alarm.

(2)Gate A/B can measure the distance and amplitude of the echo inside the gate. A
large font displayed in the upper right corner of the screen from measure value
display; Conventional measured value of gate A is sound path “Sa”, horizontal
distance “Pa”, vertical distance “Da”, echo amplitude “Ha” etc.

(3)Used for material velocity amend, probe delay and angle amend etc. See 5.5.

(4)Gate A used for monitoring echo amplitude and distance point by point in make DAC
curve.

(5)In Auto Gain mode, the highest echo in gate A auto adjust to setting amplitude, gain
displayed in “Basic gain”.

(a)For more accurate test result by using Gate measuring, select Peak or Flank in
Note:

Peak/ Flank (menu of MEASURE) before testing. This instrument set a default
value according to different requirement of various measurements for
convenience, slightly check in initial use.

(b)Generally, select “Peak” in amplitude measurement, select “Flank” in distance

measurement; chose the same acoustic point by using secondary echo test
echo distance.

5.3.2 Gate New Function

The new function of Gate A / Gate B magnify has the same name as the shortcut menu in
the main menu HOTKEY, the application is very convenient.

By screen size and digital instruments specific "compression" display technology

restriction, in large workpiece flaw detection, it’s difficult to distinguish the detail of far field
echo, this instrument set magnify function.

Adjust the Gate width to capture flaw echo for observation. When opening "Magnify"
function, the width of the gate will be widened to full screen, the echo is amplified, and its
details are clearly displayed.

Anyscan-36 not only widened 1mm small "range" to full screen, but also by adjusting the

  23

gate "starting point" to enlarge the observed detection range at any point within the echo
details.

5.4 Probe Parameter Setting

Choosing the right probe and using it correctly is the key point to ensure the accuracy and
reliability of test result. The instrument has “Probe” main menu, the set and the need to
pre-measure items classified, especially convenient for flaw detection in welds, forgings.

Note:Probe echo frequency and spectrum measurement methods, see 5.9.

Submenu of “Probe”:TYPE SPEC/ P-DELAY/ANGLE/X-VALUE, details as fellow:

5.4.1 TYPE-SPEC
Enter straight/angle probe specification, N means straight probe, A means angle probe.

After input probe type specification, all probe feature and measurement reserve default
value, much easier for application. For example:
 Chose straight probe, setting value of material velocity in submenu auto change
to 5920m/s, other submenu parameters like “thickness”, “weld set”, “weld width”
all unajustable.
 Pulse width of “Square-wave emission” will auto adjust according to probe
frequency. See 5.2.

Probe type input method: Press “TYPE-SPEC” corresponding《》key to change the

background into yellow and capital into blue, then select N/A by press《+》、
《-》,press 《》
again for next selection, while finished all setting, press《》 quit.
Note: Among all probe specifications, the most critical is straight probe N, angle probe A

and its angle;element size of the probe is not essential, if element size isn’t

included, can use closet for replacement.

5.4.2 P-DELAY
Make sure the probe delay will facilitate the measurement of defect distance, and
therefore should enter the known value of the probe delay. Failure to determine the delay
of the probe, should process “delay calibration” based on fellows 5.5 method, the delay
value will auto saved in the menu.

5.4.3 ANGLE
Enter the known value of “angle” to facilitate the defect in flaw detection with angle probe,
if “angle” unknown or need to re-confirmed, go for calibration according to fellow 5.5
method, the values will auto saved in the menu.

  24

Note: there is coarse/fine-tune setting mode in “ANGLE” menu, press《》at first time

5.5 Calibration Function

In order to locate tested flaws accurately, parameter calibration must be performed before
test to guarantee incident point locates at surface of workpiece (calibrate probe delay and
X-value), sound velocity of workpiece matching up to actual value (calibrate workpiece
velocity), incidence angle of ultrasonic wave accuracy (calibrate incidence angle).
For providing customers with convenience in parameter calibration, the instrument can
realizes calibration operation automatically. In order to improve the accuracy of calibration
results, it should be adjusted as smaller as possible for "RANGE" in the case of satisfying
echo display.

Calibration principle: the instrument makes sound velocity and probe delay calculations
through arrival time (T1 and T2) of two echoes (B1 and B2) with known sound path (S1
and S2).
Taking the CSK-ⅠA test block as an example, we will introduce four kinds of calibration
methods as follows.

5.5.1 Auto-calibration of Longitude-wave Incident Point

and Velocity of Normal Probe

The specific operation steps are as follows.
(1) Put the normal probe on A position of the CSK-ⅠA test block, and make sure the
coupling is good. Refer to Figure 5-1.

  25

5.5.2 X-VALUE Test of Angle Probe

The specific operation steps are as follows.

(1) Put the angle probe on B position of the CSK-ⅠA test block, and make sure the
coupling is good. Refer to Figure 5-1.Adjust the gain to a appropriate value and find
the highest reflected echo of R100 arc surface.

(2) You can get the X-VALUE by reading the scale value on the probe housing which is
aligned to the center groove of the R100 arc. Moreover, you can get the X-VALUE by
calculating the formula "X-VALUE = 100-L", and you can get "L" by measuring with a
ruler (refer to Figure 5-1).

5.5.3 Delay Auto-Calibration of Angle Probe

The specific operation steps are as follows.

(1) Put the angle probe on B position of the CSK-ⅠA test block, and make sure the
coupling is good. Refer to Figure 5-1. Adjust the test range to more than 100.0 mm,
sound velocity 3250m/s. Adjust gain appropriately. Move the probe to find the highest
reflected echo of R50 and R100 arc surface. Enter the CAL main menu, select
"speed/delay" calibration, S-REF 1 >: 50.0mm; S-REF 2 >: 100.0mm.

(2) Move Gate A to capture the echo of R50 arc (refer to Figure 5-4). Enter the CAL
submenu and press [+] key to confirm, then echo1 is recorded.

(5) After finish drawing of DAC curve, press ※ key and then press the PgUp key, the
completed DAC curve will be store orderly in the smallest No of “Store” menu (screen
display the reality store ID No.); at this point, the DAC curves do not display, you can
start to make a new DAC curve.
Note: Because of the hole on CSK-IIIA be arranged in two side by odd and even numbers
of the depth, for easy application, the instrument have automatic recognition
function to the echo path length and therefore does not require a full point-by-point
in order to drawing the (that is, you can stagger) DAC curve. Such as you can make
DAC curve for hole in 10mm depth and 50mm depth at first, then make the holes in
30mm and 70mm depth, last make the holes in 20mm and 40mm depth, the
instrument will automatically combined into a single completed set of DAC curve
while all the points completed..

5.6.2 DAC Curve Adjust, Modify, Store and Delete

(1) DAC curve adjustment
The completed DAC curve display in the screen from top to bottom as “RL
+6.0Db(red )”;”GENERAT 0.0dB(blue)”;”SL 0.0dB(yellow)”;”EL-6.0dB(green)”, according

  30

to different standards to a curved space is necessary to make adjustment, can enter the
"EL >" submenu to modify one by one.
Note: Because of Generate and SL is 0.0dB default, the both line overlap and appear as a
yellow which is equivalent to " GENERAT HIDE " -three-line status.

(2) The DAC curve modify

If not satisfied with one points in completed DAC curve, can entered "amend" menu for
modified: chose the points from 1-10 points in “AMEND POINT” menu, then adjust the

  31

③ Set the DAC evaluation line alarming and a variety of "measured value display"
project, see Figure 5.9.
④ Inspection results and DAC curve stored to facilitate diagnosis and inspection reports
to print.

(2) Considerations
Pay attention to fellow points in using DAC curve:
① DAC curves are made with a probe on the Reference test block, it only valid for the
probe in general. In view of the difference of probe performance, even with similar
probes, should first be authenticated (particular within the probe near-field).
② The angle probe will abrasion after several times using, its angle and performance
may changed. In compliance with the requirements of the completed curve, it should
be trimmed before using the DAC curve.
③ Most surface condition of work piece on-site won’t be smooth than reference test block,
so must go on with gain compensation while loading the DAC curve (or called as gain
amendment), the specific compensation methods see 5.8.1.

5.7 Storage of Inspection Data and Recall

There is “DATA ID” and “RECORD” two submenu in “SAVE” menu:

5.7.1 DATA ID
The instrument have 500 data ID which can store 500 group of screen graphics and
associated parameters; for apply purpose of end user, this inside data ID divided into
1~50 and 51~500 two groups, the store contents of each data ID are same and can be
loading for apply.

Stored in several ways:

5.8 TEST SETUP

Main menu contains "Auto Gain", "Gain Amend", "Envelope", "Surf Amend" and "Weld
set", there is also submenu in “Weld set” menu.

5.8.1 Auto Gain and Gain Amend

“Gain” is the most frequency used button in ultrasonic flaw detector. To facilitate the use of
this instrument, particular with “Auto Gain” and “Gain Amend” menu. The "Auto Gain"
mainly used for calibration of laboratory instruments, the "Gain Amend" is to facilitate the
scene detection sensitivity compensation. Their respective control "gain" values are
recorded in the "base gain" and "additional gain", instruction as fellow:

(1) Auto Gain

① Parameter setting range of "Auto Gain" menu is "off/20%~80%" (step 5%) and can be
adjust in circle, the instrument default set “Auto Gain=off”. When using, can
automatically adjusting echo amplitude within gate A to the menu set value; the values

  34

are shown in the upper left corner of the screen "gain display area" such as
"36.0+0.0dB", "36.0dB".
② Under main menu HOTKEY, the "Auto Gain" is actually "Auto Gain =80%" quick
switch menu, selected and press one time its related  key, the screen will display
“Auto 80%” (disappear after 3 second), the echo amplitude in Gate A will auto adjust
to 80%
③ Application instance: the instrument equipped with probe 2.5P10x10A60 ,after getting
the highest amplitude echo of Φ1×6 hole in depth 30mm on CSK-IIIA test block,
adjust Gate A to capture the echo, enter “Auto Gain” menu to set at 40% from “off”
mode, then whatever its previous amplitude is, the “Gain” will auto adjust to make it
40%(more convenient for laboratory instrument sensitivity calibration). Similarly, if
want to set “Auto Gain” at 80%,enter main menu HOTKEY, press one time “Auto Gain”
related  key, operation more convenient.
Note: When "gain step =0.0", the "Auto Gain" cannot adjust to avoid misoperation.

(2) Gain Amend

① Parameter setting range in "Gain Amend" menu from 0 to 20.0 dB, step in
0.5dB,select this menu, then press” +” or “ –“ key to set and shown in the right side of
“Gain display area” as “additional Gain”, such as, "+6dB" in"36.0+6.0dB" ,When using
"Auto Gain" setting quickly on the basis of added value and show to avoid "base gain"
mixed dishes, thus ensuring instrument calibration value does not change because of
required adjustment.
② application instance: Set the “Auto Gain” at 80%, the on-site inspection if required
compensate 6dB, then select "Gain Amend" menu and press the + key to set the
value for "6dB". At this point, "gain display area" as "36.0+6.0dB", has joined 6dB
compensation, total gain =42dB.
Note: (a) From above instance, although the adjust results of “Gain”, “Auto Gain”, “Gain
Amend” all influence the sensitivity of the instrument, but the save position of
“Gain” is different, if on-site inspection can pay attention to this point, the
application more flexible.
(b) The "Gain Amend" is a separate submenu in the instrument, can save the
setting value separately with nothing to do with “Gain” setting, so it don’t need
to worry about this temporary on site sensitivity compensation would change
the original inspection process requirements. And, if necessary, can also be
stored for the same workpiece inspection.

5.8.2 Envelope
The “Envelope” function used for observe echo amplitude changes in probe performance
testing and measuring flaw size, display the tracks of dynamic echo peak completely on
the screen. Set the “Envelope” on, the echo envelope color change to purple, much
clearly.

Note: (a) When the "probe specifications" (main menu PROBE) is set to normal probe N,
the “Surf Amend” fixed to “flat”, unchangeable.
(b) Particularly pay attention to pipe wall thickness/diameter ratio(t/d value) while
process with circumference flaw detection for pipes, according to related
standard, when t/d ≤ 0.2 should take other effective methods of testing defects
to avoid a miscarriage of justice.

5.8.4 Weld Setting

Weld inspection is the most widely used application in ultrasonic testing, so the instrument
set “Weld testing” submenu separately, it not only accurate the flaw size and display its
position parameters, but also display the flaw position in weld illustration after enter the
right weld parameter and probe position.

Enter the main menu “Flaw Setup” ,select "Weld Setting" ,there is “Weld Set”, “Weld
Width”, “P-Position, “Refresh” four submenus , you can set weld parameters and probe
position for marking defects separately, or refresh weld graphics and probe position
together and display the next defects, very simple and clear.
Note: (a) “P-Position” is distance from probe Front to weld center.
(b) When the "probe specifications" (main menu PROBE) is set to normal probe N,
"weld illustrations" can’t be entered.

5.9 Measurement
Main menu “Measure” contain “TOF”, “PEAK HOLDING”, “ECHO COMPARE”,
“READINGS”, “FFT” five submenu, their characteristics as follow:

5.9.1 TOF
The measurement accuracy of digital ultrasonic flaw detector associated with selection of
measure point in using Gate, so correct choice before measurement is needed to make.
Followed with explanation of “peak” and “flank” in “TOF” menu:
• Peak: means the measure point is the highest echo peak point in the gate;

  36

• Flank: means the measure point is the cross point of first echo within the gate and
gate.
Note: The location of the measure point, marked on the gate.

In General, use “peak” in test echo amplitude, such as echo amplitude Ha%, making DAC
curve etc, use ”flank” in test echo distance, such as sound path of defects inspection with
angle probe, auto velocity calibration. The instrument have set its related default value for
those need to chose peak or flank in testing, check in the first time using.
Note: Default value of the instrument set as “peak”, in thickness testing with echo in the
gate, firstly set “TOF” as “flank”, it’s really important for surplus wall thickness of corroded
pipelines and thin workpieces inspection.

5.9.2 Peak Holding

The echo peak is one of the most important parameters in ultrasonic testing, in many
cases as the basis for making judgments, so most of the instruments are equipped with
"PEAK HOLDING" function.

Active the” PEAK HOLDING” function, peak of dynamic wave and its position will display
on the screen marked as “×”,refreshing once there is new peak appears, it’s the normal
way to confirm echo peak in probe performance testing and on-site inspection scanning.

5.9.3 Echo Compare

In on-site inspection, the shape of echo wave carry with so many important information of
defects ,which often requires some echo (such as intensive defect) comparative analysis
of the details. The new added “ECHO COMPARE” function of the instrument convenient

of front and back edge),the experienced inspector can distinguished some characteristics
of defects.

5.9.4 Readings
As long as improvement of electronic technology, the ultrasonic digital flaw detector can
get more and more digital information from echoes. For convenient display and
observation, besides fixed Sa/Ha% display of straight probes and Sa/Da/Pa display of
angle probes, there is “READINGS” menu for user choice.

  37

See “READINGS” in table 1 of "Appendix one" Selected items will be displayed in large
print in the top right corner of the screen.

5.9.5 FFT
Wave length of ultrasonic wave propagation in workpiece is one of most important
elements of equivalent effect defect judgment, so the probes echo frequency accuracy is
very important, echo frequency error of standards at domestic and abroad will be limited
to within ± 10%. Anyscan-36 using FFT technique set "FFT" menu, can easily measure
and display probe signal -6dB bandwidth and center frequency “fo”. Followed with
example of using normal probe 2.5P20N to explain its using method:

(1) Enter “probe” menu, select “TYPE-SPEC” and set probe type as “N2.5P20”.

data and modification would be deleted, Be discreet!

5.11 AVG Function

5.11.1 Summarize
In ultrasonic flaw detection, the shape, nature and direction of natural flaws are different
from each other, flaws with same echoes amplitude actually differ greatly, thus introduce
"equivalent size" to evaluate flaws size. Under same detect condition, if the echo
amplitude of natural flaw equal to that of regularly shaped artificial flaw, the artificial flaw
size is defined as the natural flaw equivalent size.

The curve used for describing relations among distance, amplitude and equivalent size of
regular reflector is called distance-amplitude-equivalent size curve, in German called AVG,
in English called DGS.

5.11.2 AVG Making

Operating Steps: (taking 2.5P20 normal probe, CS-1-5 test block, 200¢2 flat bottom hole
as an example).

(1) Set instrument and probe parameters;

(2) Calibrate instrument and probe;

(3) Make the probe tightly coupled on the CS-1-5 block, move probe to seek the highest
echo of flat bottom hole, refer to Figure 5-10;

  41

225mm
25mm

Figure 5-10 The Making Diagram of AVG Figure 5-11 AVG Waveform Display

(4) Enter AVG menu, adjust aperture to 2mm, equivalent of reference curve can be set
according to requirement (here take 1mm for example). Move gate A to capture flat
bottom hole echo, select POLT submenu, then press [+] key to confirm AVG making.
Refer to Figure 5-11.

5.11.3 Notes
Before Making AVG , you should pay attention to whether probe frequency and crystal
size is suitable, whether the probe parameter settings agree with the actual and reference
curve range is "0.5~23.5mm,∞" or not.

5.11.4 AVG Application

In theory, the AVG curve is effective only beyond the triple near field area. Probes
produced by different manufactures have quite different sound field characteristics within
tripe near field area, so you should make AVG by sampling multiple points or verifying the
test block first; otherwise it may occur unnecessary error easily.

The attenuation coefficient between test block and work piece is not considered when
using the AVG.

Compensation or calibration should be made when coupling condition changes (different

surface condition of test block and workpiece).

Chapter VI Brief Introduction of UT Application

This chapter shows specific application of weld and forging piece of Anyscan-36 briefly, to
enable inspectors to be in full use of this instrument, to find out the flaws precisely and
make do with flaw data and report rapidly.

6.1 Preparation of Flaw Detection

Be sure to be familiar with “User Manual” before detection, the basic of operating the
instrument is to know about the function and operation, requirement of safety-use of
electricity. Be aware of following points:

(1)Prepare specific probe, make or detect DAC curve, to see whether it meets the
requirement;

(2)To know about the features of the test piece and its surface status, calculate and set

  43

gain value (surface compensation).

(3)Check battery before using battery for power supply.

6.2 Weld Flaw Detection

Weld flaw detection has the most various application of UT inspection. With small size,
excellent performance, Anyscan-36 can meet field inspection for thick, mid, thin welds
quite well. Software Interface & Assistance Functions of the Instrument are mainly design
for Welding Detections, easy to operate. Take 20mm V-type weld for instance, to show
how to operate the instrument.

6.2.1 Probe Detect and Instrument Setting

(1) Choose angle beam probe 2.5P8×12 according to flaw detection requirement,
select “Probe”, enter “specification” submenu, and set as “A2.5P8×12”.

(2) Connect the probe, place it on CSK-IA, test the point of incidence, X-value, and
calibrate delay and angle of it (Refer to 5.5), check whether relative parameters
that being entered to corresponding submenu correctly.

(3) Choose TEST SETUP in the main menu and enter submenu of “Weld set”, select
“V” in “Weld set”, enter “10” in “Weld width”.

(4) Choose BASIC in the main menu, set “Range” as “100”, “Thickness” as “20”,
check whether “Velocity” is as default “3230”; then check submenus of PULSVR
in the main menu, whether as default set (See 4.2.2).
(5) Confirm the gain amend value which is based on surface status of the test piece,
to reserve enough allowance during the process of calibrating the sensitivity of
flaw detection.

(6) Set sensitivity of flaw detection on test block CSK-ⅢA:

① Means of “Not-use-auto-gain”: Set “auto-gain” as “OFF”, adjust “Gain” to 40% of
selected Φ1×6 hole, “Gain” value at this point (say,34dB) is initial sensitivity; If
surface compensation of 6dB is needed for field inspection, adjust “Gain” to
achieve it, say, adjust “Gain” to 40dB.
② Means of use “Auto-gain” and “Gain amend” : Select submenu “Auto-gain ”, as
“OFF” , entangle the peak of Φ1×6 hole, press “+” to set “Auto-gain” as “40%”,
“Gain” could adjust echo amplitude as “40%” automatically and be shown on
“Basic gain”(say, 34.0+0.0dB), which could be used as initial sensitivity; If surface
compensation of 6dB is needed for field inspection, select submenu “Gain amend”,
press “+” to set as “6.0dB”, 34+6.0dB would be shown in the right top corner of the
screen. 34.0 is “Initial sensitivity”, +6.0dB is added as “Additional gain” for gain

  44

amend.
③ Means of use “Auto-gain” and “GAIN AMEND” in main menu HOTKEY: entangle
the peak ofΦ1×6 hole, enter HOTKEY and select “Auto-gain” submenu, echo
wave amplitude is being adjusted to 80% automatically(Gain is shown as
“40.0+0.0dB”), If 6dB gain amend is needed for field inspection, enter “Gain
amend” in “TEST SETUP”, set as “6.0dB”, 40.0+6.0dB would be shown on right
top corner of the screen, 40.0 is “Initial sensitivity”, +6.0 is added as “Additional
gain” for gain amend.

(a)Check “Preview” fully after above settings finished, save flaw detection interface,
Note:

which is critical for flaw detection report or multiple use.

(b)Make DAC curve as 5.6 shows, check echo wave frequency of the probe as

5.10, if necessary.

6.2.2 Key Points for Field Inspection

(1) Check surface status of the weld again, to make sure whether it is reasonable for
the estimated gain amend (surface compensation).

(2) When peak is being discovered, choose “Gate A”(GATE main menu), press “+”
again, gate A would entangle the echo wave automatically. Sa/Da/Pa value of the
flaw would be shown on right of the screen; Select “Ha%” at “Readings” to show
echo wave amplitude of the flaw.

(3) Measure the distance between probe front edge and weld center, enter it to
“Probe position” (Main menu TEST SETUP), weld image down the screen
indicates the flaw position.

(4) Press “※” (Freeze), then press PgUp once to save screen graphics and current
instrument parameters orderly, set “Refresh” (Main menu TEST SETUP) as “ON”
to clear previous flaw position, easy to be used for the next flaw.

(5) Transfer above saved data to PC via U-disk or cable, to print flaw detection
reports.

6.3 Flaw Detection of Axis Forging Piece

Flaw detection of forging piece is more complicated than weld, especially for huge
forgings in power station which require strictly for the sensitivity, resolution, stability,
reliability, field maneuverability, and anti-interference. Anyscan-36 is small in size, yet can
reach high standard for forging flaw detection, of which bring tremendous convenience by
its super dynamic range, optional repetitive frequency, gate expandable and easy
operation interface, etc.

  45

Application of flaw detection: Choose DC2.5P20N with membrane probe to test Φ800
forging piece according to the requirement of flaw detection.

(1) Go to “TYPE SPEC” (Main menu Probe) and check whether default is N2.5P20.

(2) Select main menu BASIC, set “RANGE” as 850mm, check whether velocity is as
default value “5920”.

(3) Choose “PLSRCVR”, check whether it is with default set(see 4.2.2). Usually,
mid-size forging piece should be set as: Pulse width of square wave=200,
damping: 200, if necessary, make DAC curve as 5.6, check echo frequency as
5.10.

(4) Initial sensitivity set of flaw detection:

① Set flaw detection sensitivity on 200-Φ2 flat bottom test block, entangle it at peak
by Gate A, go to HOTKEY and choose “Auto-gain”, press  once, “Gain” could
adjust the wave to 80% automatically(Say,48.0+0.0dB),field Inspection takes
48dB as initial sensitivity.
② Identify flaw detection sensitivity by adopting “Bottom wave comparison”: Find a
higher bottom wave around the entangle and adjust it to 80% as a basic point, to
calculate how much of the sensitivity needed (Say, find flaw atΦ2 in the center at
least, sensitivity increases to 38dB accordingly).

Note: Better to open “Preview” list and check them all and then save after completing

above set, to print or re-use.

(5) Confirm the compensation value (Gain amend) according to surface status of the
test piece, curvature and scan requirement during the process of field inspection.
If compensation is 18dB, go to “Gain amend” (Main menu TEST SETUP).

(6) If single or multiple fixed or mobile unknown reflected wave appear during the
process of scanning, to lower down repetitive frequency to judge (Go to main
menu PULSVR for “PRF”); To judge the trend and length of flaws of non-metallic
inclusions, select “Peak holding” (Main menu MEASURE) or go to “Envelope”
(Main menu TEST SETUP) submenu, to determine echo peak and -6dB(or -12dB)
scanning length.

(7) After scanning, save echo graphics of each flaw and instrument data, if necessary,
transfer the data to PC to print flaw detection reports.

6.4 Other Mechanical Parts Flaw Detection

As a universal ultrasonic flaw detector, Anyscan-36 can be widely used for various

  46

mechanical parts flaw detection besides above weld and forging. This chapter takes
thickness 160mm square aluminum as an example to introduce the application features of
ultrasonic test.

(1) Instrument set: Adopt 5P10N narrow pulse probe to detect, Set “PLSRCVR” menu
as below(Others are set as conventional)
① Square wave transmit:Pulse width 100ns;
② Damping:50Ω;
③ Frequency band:0.5~22MHz.

(2) Judging difficulty: When set “Range” as 170mm, bottom resolution of the
instrument could distinguish 5mm hole clearly, but near surface 5mmΦ1.2 is stuck
with initial wave, which makes it difficult to distinguish whether near flaw exists,
detect its depth, of which make it hard to judge the flaws.

(3) Solution: If initial wave becomes wider during the process of scanning, use “A
magnify” to observe, detailed operation methods are as below:
①After set of “Range”, open gate A and set as: Start=3mm, width=10mm,
threshold=35%.
②Select “A magnify” (Main menu HOTKEY), press “+”,enter expandable status,
whether 5mm Φ1.2 hole and initial wave are totally separated or not and the
beam path Sa value would be shown in the screen.
③Select “Save” (Main menu HOTKEY),press “+” to save and check, after
completion, set “A magnify” as OFF.

Note:Means of flaw detection for die steel(before opening mould) is similar to above, be

sure to pay attention to the positioning, quantitative, with mould processing

drawings, to exclude all flaws from the mould interface.

6.5 Attention Problems of Ultrasonic Test

Ultrasonic test is a kind of test that based on propagation features of ultrasonic wave in
test piece, focusing on its reflection, transmission and dispersion in the test piece, to
measure it macroscopically. It is critical for the evaluation of flaws for its wave length,
incidence direction and resolution of density flaws. Therefore, following issues are
required to be paid special attention in the use of ultrasonic flaw detectors.

6.5.1 Probe Precision of Echo Wave Frequency

Ultrasonic wave length λ plays an important role in evaluating flaw detection quantitative
when propagates in the work piece, λ depends on echo frequency of the probe, it is
universally recognized that the error of probe (equipped with instrument) echo wave
frequency should be less than ±10% of the rated frequency, but for many homemade
probes, the error is tremendous due to kinds of misleading, be sure to pay attention to the

  47

probe in case of misjudging.

“Frequency spectrum” function was specially designed to facilitate users to check echo
wave frequency of Anyscan-36, which can be used to test feature curve of frequency
spectrum with probe and instrument.

Besides, current conventional narrow band probes like 2.5P20,5P14,etc, all of them are
equipped with resonance coil, therefore 2m cable(Material: SYV-50-2-1) is required, or
resonance point of the probe may shift. For some cases, if cable is required to be more
than 3m for some occasion, to avoid waveform distortion of the echo wave, change coil
inside the probe or take some other compensation means seems to be a must.

6.5.2 Mind Whether Frequency Range of the Instrument

Meets Standard Value

Currently pulser/receiver system is basically belonging to analogic circuit, which excites
probe to produce ultrasonic wave in the test piece, and amplify the weak signal received.
Therefore, this system is the HEART of UFD! Its performance determines the level. Based
on current technology invent a receiver amplifier that with frequency width 0.5~20MHz,
amplify to 86dB is not a hard job if put hearts into it, it is a pity that not a few products that
are far away from this standard.

Therefore, users who use 10MHz or above to perform high resolution tests should
carefully check the instrument during purchasing and using, if necessary, hand it to
authoritative organization to be identified, to avoid abnormality like, sensitivity and
resolution of ultrasonic test from imported high frequency narrow pulse probes are not
as good as low frequency ones.

Besides, Compared with sharp pulse of the same amplitude, square wave transmission
could increase sensitivity up to 4~6dB, but, it is suitable for the excitation of rated 2~5MHz
probe only; If, frequency above 10MHz, especially for high frequency narrow pulse probe,
it is useless for square wave transmission, other problems may occur by wrong settings,
users should be alert of it.

Note:They are not the same concept between amplifying 86dB and “Gain” regulating

variability 110dB.

  48

6.5.3 Instrument Settings When Use High Frequency

Narrow Pulse Probe to Perform High Resolution Ultrasonic

Test
High frequency narrow pulse probes, like 10C6N (or 10P6N), 15P6Y, are widely used for
high resolution test of aircraft engines and auto parts due to that they have only 1.5~2 ring
circle, and the negative echo wave amplitude is high enough, for example: Paste quality
check of composite material (overall thickness 0.8mm), auto detect for spot welding and
small caliber thin pipe, etc.

High frequency narrow pulse probe is also high damping probe, it adopts special crystal
and being made by complicated process, relative bandwidth of its frequency spectrum of
echo wave -6dB is above 60%,for high level, it is even up to 80%~100%(Some probes
with composite material may be even higher ).Therefore, use probes correctly and ensure
its wide frequency band could be displayed in high fidelity, extreme high requirement for
the matching instrument is listed below:

(1) Rising time of pulser front edge tr should be small enough, usually requires
tr≤10ns, otherwise, sensitivity test may be effected.

(2) Working frequency range for receiver amplifier should be wide enough, usually
requires -6dB width ≥15MHz (Better ≥20MHz), of which can assure high fidelity
transmission of probe echo wave(Say, display 1.5~2 ring circle after amplification,
waveform would not be distorted), to obtain high resolution.

(3) Wave-test means must possess options of “POSITIVE”/”NEGATIVE”(Mostly

adopts “NEGATIVE”).

(4) Instrument must has such settings: “damping”≤50Ω.

Note:(a)Four above points are indispensable for the instrument.

(b)In the concept of “high damping” for the probe, it requires not only enough high

for the “electric damping”, but also includes that nice coupling “sound
damping” should be good enough. In other words: the high resolution result
would be low for the narrow pulse probe if coupling is not good, special
attention should be paid for field use.

6.5.4 Mind Choosing the Measure Points

Choosing a measure point can directly affect the measuring sensitivity of instrument
display. To facilitate usage of the machine, two options for the measuring points are being

  49

equipped with the instrument: “PEAK” and “FLANK”, set it as default set to avoid trouble
for field operation, but for the first time to use this instrument, check it and know it better
should be performed.

Usually, below two principles should be followed for the choosing of measuring points:
(1) Adopt “PEAK” if measurement is related with amplitude of echo wave.
(2) Adopt “FLANK” if measurement if related with distance of echo wave.

Note:(a)“FLANK” ensuring points refer to the intersection between the front edge of the

first echo wave and gate, it relates to the “height” of the gate. Strictly speaking,
when measure times for the distance between two echo waves by adopting two
gates A/B, be sure that the “measuring points” are the same “sound point”,
which means, the height of gate A/B is not in the same ground level contour.

(b)When measure surplus wall thickness of the chemical pipes, adopt “FLANK” is a

must; If set as “PEAK” by mistake, as front edge of echo wave is too slanted
and variable, major deviation display, which may cause misjudge.

Chapter VIII Safe Operation Prompts

This chapter focuses on the safe operation prompts, and expect users to use properly
instrument to avoid safety hazards.

8.1 Use Manual and the Instruments

Understanding the structure, features, the basic method and use precautions of safe
operation through the product manual is an essential work. This section will introduce

  55

them one by one as follows.

8.1.1 Instrument Power Work

(1) Environment Conditions
This product is a Class II electronic instrument. In accordance with the provisions of the
relevant standards, the working environment temperature is 0 ~ 40 ℃, relative humidity of
20 % to 90% of RH (+40 ° C), and storage ambient temperature is -40 to +60 ° C.
Therefore, usage and storage under normal conditions should meet the above
requirements to ensure the stability and reliability of the instrument.

Anyscan-36 can work safely in more harsh field or high overhead environment , especially
expand the working environment temperature at -10 ~ +50 ℃, and has waterproof of IP54
standard level , so no adverse effects caused on the test results even work in the summer
and winter or micro rain weather.

(2) Battery-powered
Anyscan 36 specially use (10.8V 5200mAh) lithium battery-powered. A fully charged
battery can work around 6h.

Pressing the panel "Power" button for about 2s and turn on the instrument, and enter
detection working screen after displaying boot interface, menu settings is the one before
normal shutdown last time.

Instrument is in working condition , press the panel " power " key for about 2s and will shut
off the power supply , it’s a normal shutdown state , the original parameters will be
recognized and saved . If the instrument suddenly loses power (battery depletion or AC
adapter disconnected), it’s a non- normal shutdown, the parameters set before the power
failure may not been saved, so should be checked.

The instrument features screen battery level indicator and low voltage alarm shutdown
function, favorable to remind users to timely charge.

(3) The battery charging and protection

AC adapter CD-30A (DC 15V/4A) DC-30A can recharge the battery in the instrument; the
conventional charging current is about 1A. There is a power management system inside
of the instrument and will automatically switch to trickle charge when the battery is going
to complete and disconnected to ensure the safety of charge.

Note: CD-30A of the instrument is the preferred high-capacity dedicated adapter; it can
simultaneously change battery and power to the instrument, but do not mix with other
instruments or batteries.

The optimum use temperature Lithium batteries is about 25 ℃, the temperature is too high

  56

or too low will affect the effect of the charge and discharge, so should pay attention to the
efficiency of the battery when the ambient temperature deviation is too large.

Batteries generally have a requirements of storage period, even if a fully charged battery
doesn’t use for too long time, it should recharge again before use in order to ensure a
sufficient supply time.

Lithium batteries with electrical storage for too long time and easily cause internal damage
so should be charged and discharged as soon as possible after a period of inactivity.

8.1.2 Preview Function and Help for Flexible Menu

(1) The application of menu preview list
The “Preview” and “Help “of the instrument was briefly introduced in the section of 5.10
and recommend specific methods for several preview lists in this section.
①After setting Instrument parameters according to the requirements of the relevant
standards, open the "Preview" function of the overall browser (including the default
settings items without manually input), save it after accuracy confirmed .
②When you recall the stored content in the "storage ID number" for on-site
inspection, Check and correct the setting status of key menu (such as "gain
amend", "weld set") by "Preview" function after thawing.
③ When needs to save Flaw echo screen in on-site inspection, save and pull up the
"Preview" list to check if the current parameters settings is correct, to avoid
unnecessary misunderstandings.
In short, the "Preview" list with unobstructed views can quickly check all settings in the
menu and modify, particularly when multiple people use the same instrument, more
effectively to prevent misoperation.

(2) Help content

The instruments shortcuts and the use method of the main functions are listed in “Help, to
make sure the holders of ultrasonic inspection certificate can correctly operate the
instrument away from user manual. It is particularly convenient in this field or high
overhead operation.

The main content of the " help " :

① The performance characteristics of the instrument ;
② The introduction of panel buttons ;
③ The menu basic structure and operation ;
④ The main menu features of HOTKEY;
⑤ DAC curve;
⑥ Other key function menu operations.

  57

8.1.3 Holding the Instrument in Filed Application

(1)Single hand hold the instrument
Anyscan-36with hand belts which can be installed on the left or right, while hold with left
hand, can easy operate the left button: "gain”, "PgUp”, "PgDn” .

(2)Backpack belts hold the instrument

Anyscan-36 packing with suitcase and belts.
The suitcase for protection the instrument in Trans potion and field of application, belts
used for inconvenient single hand held (such as high- overhead operations), flat placed in
front of the chest, strap should back cross the instrument keep stable and solid.

8.2 Emphasis on the Training and Application of

Ultrasonic Testing Foundation

8.2.1 Inspect with Qualified Certificate

Ultrasonic testing is one of the important ways to ensure safety of the equipment, it
belongs to highly specialized technical work, and the inspector must qualify with certificate
according to state regulations. The manuals aimed at introduce the instrument function,
performance and application characteristics, others about principle of ultrasonic testing
and defect evaluation please refer to relevant training documents.

8.2.2 Periodic Inspect the Instrument Strictly Compliance

with Industry Standards

There are so many regulations and industry standards in Non-destructive testing industry,
not only the material inspect method, but also those accordance requirements of
instruments and periodic performance testing are listed. Ultrasonic flaw detector is
precision electronic products and its using environment is relatively poor, often need to
inspect its main performance, it’s quite important to have a fully measurement evaluation
after long term usage (such as half year or one year).

The standard echo probe of Anyscan-36 named as PE-50 made off with special material
and technology, the center frequency is 5MHZ. The most important feature of PE-50
probe is the distance between the echo amplitude and multiple echoes can be saved in a
long time ( several years ) , stable and unchanging , therefore it can be calibration tools for
instrument detection sensitivity , vertical linearity , horizontal linearity and detection
range ,simple and convenient.

For example:In check the acceptance of instrument, recording the gain value of first or
second echo B1 or B2 amplitude at 80%,check every time while connect with echo probe,

  58

the little change of sensitivity can be found out. In addition, save the echo wave of PE-50
in check the acceptance, the above inspection is more convenient.

8.2.3 Reduce Misjudgment Rate by Expert Diagnosis

Save, recall and data transmit function of Anyscan-36 can store defect graphic or dynamic
echo wave on –site, convenient for subsequent analysis, discussion and expert diagnosis,
providing favorable conditions to reduce misjudgment rate .

8.3 Attention to Safe Electricity

The AC adaptor used for charge the battery inside or supplies the instrument with
100-240v AC power, must be performed in compliance with the national laws and
regulations on the safe use of electricity to ensure safety.

Chapter IX Maintenance and Repair

This instrument is a precision electronic product, use and maintenance should be

implemented strictly in accordance with the relevant norms.

9.1 Instrument Maintenance

The places of instrument installation should be avoided from strong electromagnetic

  59
