Document Development Exposition: Recommendation Report

ENGL 2116 | Spring 2018

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
In planning this recommendation report, I decided to discuss trap-neuter-return because I
had recently watched an episode of My Cat from Hell dealing with the subject. I also have
experience with feral cats from living on a farm for a few years when I was younger. Some
were very friendly while others were completely unapproachable, which had always
confused me. I figured writing my recommendation report about feral cat would satisfy both
the assignment requirements and my curiosity. I used my own neighborhood for the report
setting because I am already familiar with the area.

First Draft
For my first draft, the first item of research was revisiting the episode of My Cat from Hell to
get an overview of how I should approach the recommendation report. I also looked up
what trap-neuter-return was and if there were any programs in the Charlotte area that
performed the procedure. I wrote from the perspective of an administrator/manager of my
neighborhood alerting residents of the feral cat problem and how they could help. I have
experience in the administrative field, so I drew from those skills in writing this document.

Second Draft
In my second draft after peer review, I rearranged the sections I had into an order that made
more linguistic sense. I added more information about what feral cats are, why the
organizers would be returning the cats instead of relocating them, and additional
explanatory details. I did additional research into training programs offered in the area that
teach the public about how people can conduct their own TNR programs. I learned quite a
bit on my second draft and may consider volunteering myself.

Final Draft
Per direction, I fixed grammatical errors and reorganized wordy sentences. I also
restructured the last bullet point section, “Volunteers.” I moved the address for the Humane
Society into the previous bullet and made the two succeeding sub-bullets into main points.
Overall, I learned quite a bit about feral cats and how to aid the issue.
