Essential Questions:

What are physical and chemical changes of matter?

TEKS/Lesson Targets:

The student will… be able to differentiate between physical and chemical changes and
properties.

Pre-Assessment: What do the students already know? How did you determine this?
Get out a piece of paper and write what you already know about physical and chemical
changes.

5E Plan
Engage ( 5 min.):
Mix-Pair-Share (class mixes until the teacher calls “pair.” Students will find a new
partner to discuss the teacher’s question)
1. What are differences between physical and chemical properties?
2. What are the differences between physical and chemical changes.

Explore ( 5 min.):

Team Stand-N-Share, (Teams stand with a list of ideas to share. The teacher
selects one student to share an idea. Other teams either check the idea off their
list or add it. Each team sits when all items on its list is shared.
What kind of change is this and why?

Explain ( 15 min.):
● Go over how physical and chemical properties and where you would see those
changes occur

/physical%20and%20chemical%20changes2.pdf

Elaborate ( 10 min.):
Explain to a partner what kind of labs can be done to demonstrate a physical or chemical
change

Categorize the cards between physical and chemical changes with your group

Evaluation ( 10 min.):

Homework:
● For homework the students will make a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting
physical and chemical changes.
Differentiation: How will this lesson be modified to meet the needs of all learners?
Up above, highlight (in same colors as below) where you accommodated for the
following learners:

Auditory Learner

Kinesthetic Learner :

Visual Learner
Special Education

Closure: This should be an active recapping of what was taught.

The goal of the lesson is to teach the differences between physical and chemical
changes and properties. Physical changes include the change of appearance, shape or size of
a substance. Some examples of this include an egg being cracked, a piece of paper being cut
and fabric being dyed. A chemical change is the process when one or more substances change
into entirely new substances with different properties. You can tell when a physical change
happened by the production of odors, gases, a precipitate, and change in temperature and
color. Some examples of this are burning wood, rusting of iron, and digesting food.
