ABSTRACT

The Relationship between Spiritual experience and depression among Inmates in a Class I
Cipinang Prision

Backround
Depression is mental disorder that often experienced among Inmates in prision. Enhancing the
spiritual experience can be one way to prevent depression. Based on the Bureau of Justices
Stastics (BJS) Reported that the prevalence of mental disorders among prissioners in the US
(2006) was 64%. Research conducted by Constantino on detainees located at Rio de Janeiro
Brazil shows that people with high levels of spirituality show mild depression or even no
depression and vice versa The Purpose of this study to analyze realitionship between spiritual
experience and depression among inmates in Cipinang Class I Prision.

Method
This study used observational analysis, with cross sectional approach. This study starts from
June to October 2017 in a Class I Cipinang Prision. Data collectinn and used BDI-II and
DSES questionnaires by direct interview method using consecutive sampling. Analysis using
Ststistical program and significance level in use magnitude 0.05.

Result
Univariate analysis show that the majority of inmates ist betawi tribe. The age group with the
most depression is age less than 45 years. Inmates of high school education are more
depressed than elemetary and junior high school graduates. The incidence of depression
among Inmates in a Class I Cipinang Prision 74 respondent and Respondent who did not
depression amounted to 79 people. Based on Bivariate Analysis using Chi-Square test method
that was a significant relationship between spiritual experiences and depression (p = 0.021
<0.05) this is indicates that there is a relationship between spiritual experience with
depression among inmates a class I Cipinang Prision.
