Document Development Exposition: Request Letter

ENGL 2116 | Spring 2018

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
My biggest challenge when planning this request letter was choosing a recipient. I wasn’t
entirely sure what or who I should request for. Eventually I settled on a request for funding,
and once I decided that, I figured I should request from the Department of Commerce, as
the National Weather Service is a sub administration of the department. Then I just looked
up the head of the Dept. of Commerce and addressed the letter to him.

First Draft
When writing the first draft of the request letter, my biggest challenge was deciding how
much introductory and problem information I should include in the first section. I knew that
I needed to introduce the problem and explain why it needs to be addressed. However, I did
not want to write so much that he would become bored or just flat out ignore it because it
was too long. I had to cut out some information to make it shorter because of this. I learned
more about how to include only the most important information to get the point across.

Second Draft
I did not have a second draft for this letter.

Final Draft
My final draft on Canvas did not have any changes to make as far as I could see. However, I
did change the image sources to be more readable and made a few changes to some
sentence structures.
