Appropriation in a Multicultural
World
The worldwide expansion of sacred plant medicine ceremonies beyond their
cultural boundaries has been coined a “global shamanic revival”. Increasing
numbers of Westerners are traveling to the Amazon, Central America, and
Africa to participate in tribal ceremonies, initiations and festivals. This
heightened interest in indigenous culture has fueled an indigenous cultural
renaissance in the Amazon and elsewhere.
At the forefront of this “Global Shamanic Revival” are Western teachers of

shamanism, facilitators of plant medicine ceremonies, and neoshamans.
Western participants in these events don feathers and face paint, often
applied by the indigenous themselves. Yet underneath this fascination with
indigenous culture, the roots of racism, colonialism and cultural
appropriation persist. How can Western ceremony facilitators o er and be
compensated for their services, without perpetuating colonialism. How can
Western practitioners of shamanism embrace indigenous culture, without
appropriating it? How can those who walk the path of plant medicine
shamanism do so in right relation to the people who are the cultural

guardians of these medicine traditions?

Deep in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, Lorna Liana discovered
her purpose and her divine calling while drinking visionary plant
medicines with indigenous shamans. She was given a mission:
“To leverage emerging technologies to preserve indigenous traditions,

so that ancient wisdom can bene t the modern world, and technology
can empower indigenous people.”
In pursuit of this mission, Lorna became a new media strategist to

sustainable brands, social ventures and visionary entrepreneurs,
helping them attract their tribe and ignite a movement around
their mission-driven businesses. Through podcasting, video
blogging and social media, she shares the stories of both
indigenous people and the world’s foremost experts in
psychedelic science, modern shamanism, and consciousness
research to inspire each and every one of us to explore the depths
of our minds, spirits, planet…and evolve.
For the past 4 years Lorna has built her business as a digital
nomad, living in Thailand, Bali, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Hawaii,
and Spain. She helps intuitives become visionary leaders, and
visionary leaders inspire a movement.
About The Artist

Anderson Debernardi was born on the 12th of June ,1968 in
Orellana (Distrito de Vargas Guerra) a small town near Ucayali
river in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest . When he was 5 years old
his family moved to Iquitos. A particularly gifted student during
primary and secondary school, Andy won many local art
competitions.
Andy was one of founding students of the Usko-Ayar Amazonian

School of Painting which was established in 1988 in the city of
Pucallpa by Pablo Amaringo and Luis Eduardo Luna. He held key
roles in the project as the nancial administrator as well as one of
the main teachers. In 1992 he was invited along with Pablo
Amaringo and two other members of the Usko-Ayar School to
Tampere, Finland. In 1995 Andy painted a large 20 square meters
mural for the South American Building of the Helsinki Zoo. Andy
was later commissioned to paint 16 murals in the South American
and African building over the course of 5 years. This work has
been presented many times in Finland, where Andy is a very well-
known artist. Along with numerous exhibitions in Peru, in cultural
institutions and diplomatic circles, his work has also been shown
in the United States. He has also participated in di erent editions
of the Noche de Arte en Lima organized by USAFIS. His
international activity is quite well known in Washington, Wyoming
(Cheyenne), Colorado (Denver), Japan, England, Norway, Sweden,
Finland, and Colombia.
