Before class, make one copy of the cards for each group of four and cut as indicated.
Procedure
Tell the class that they are going to play a miming game where they have to guess what
students were told to do using reported speech.
Invite students to come to the front of the class. Whisper a command in their ear, e.g. close
the door, don’t turn off the radio, etc.
Students mime each command. If the command is negative, have the students make an X
by crossing their arms and then acting out the command.
The class then guesses what you told each student to do using reported speech, e.g. You
said to close the door. You said not to turn off the radio, etc.
Next, divide the class into groups of four. The two pairs in each group play against each
other.
Give each group a set of shuffled cards and ask them to place the cards face down in a pile.
One student picks up a card and reads the command on the card. The student then
whispers the command to their partner.
Their partner acts out the command to the other pair of students. If the command is
negative, the student makes an X by crossing their arms before they begin the mime.
The other pair of students watch the mime and try to guess what the student told their
partner to do. They use reported speech to say what they think the command was, e.g.
He/she said go to bed.
The pair has one minute to guess the command. If they manage to guess the command and
make a suitable sentence within the time limit, they score a point.
The pair with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
