Question: Marks=10

Let

a. Find the domain of f(x,y)

b. By using different paths, show that whether the limit of f(x,y) exists at the origin
or not.
c. Is the function continuous at origin? Justify your answer.

Solution:

Let

(a) The domain of f(x,y) will be all real numbers.

Let d= w{f(x,y)}={(x,y)/eR2}

(b) If (x,y) approaches to (0,0) at the origin from the left then we write,

5 xy  y 3
f (x, y) 
2
lim lim xe x
( x , y ) (0,0) ( x , y ) (0,0)

lim f (x, y)  0
( x , y ) (0,0)

If (x,y) approaches to (0,0) at the origin from the right then we write,
5 xy  y3
f (x, y) 
2
lim lim xe x
( x , y )(0,0) ( x , y ) (0,0)
Hence using different paths, the limit of f(x,y) exist at the origin

(c) The function is continuous at the origin because

f (0,0)=0 and
lim f (x, y)  0  f (0,0)
( x , y )(0,0)
