REINFORCEMENT OF MASONRY WITH FIBREBUILD SYSTEM

THE METHOD OF REINFORCED RENDER

This method is used when masonry is rather worn or not safe enough, because strains are higher than the acceptable level.
The method of reinforcing render with such systems as FIBREBUILD® consists in laying FRP meshes and connections over the
surface of the degraded wall, duly incorporated in a thin layer of render, in accordance with the engineer’s requirements.
The system will be all the more efficient if reinforced render is laid on both sides of the wall. In case of badly degraded,
poor quality or loose walls (cement-core walls, walls made of random stones or cobbles, etc.), great care must be given
to laying through connections.
The use of FIBREBUILD® system will not require any special types of mortars. Any mortar containing concrete, hydraulic
lime, pozzolan, etc. will do. It will be the engineer’s task to identify the type of mortar best adapted to the use, depending
on the type of wall to be reinforced and on the mesh size selected.

BENEFITS OF THE SYSTEM

The use of FIBREBUILD® system helps upgrade considerably the mechanical characteristics of a masonry in a uniform and
non-invasive way. Because the materials are stainless, they may be used with mortars containing traditional binders, like
hydraulic lime. Also, the layer of reinforced render is so thin and added mass so poor that the system can be safely used
in areas of high seismic risk.

MODE OF INSTALLATION

During on-site installation, follow the steps below:

• Remove the old render and all degraded elements, then scrape about 2 cm deep into the joints to help the mortar stick
to the surface and penetrate into the joints.
• Clean and wash the surface thoroughly.
• If required, re-build the masonry where badly damaged or missing.
• Lay the first coat of render.
• Lay the mesh, unrolling it from bottom to top, or vice versa, between the scaffold and the walls.
• Fix temporarily the mesh to the walls with nails for carpentry to help the mesh adjust correctly and cut the mesh around
the openings. The mesh can be cut with the help of clippers and/or nippers or an angle grinder.
• Overlap two sheets of mesh by about 15-20 cm to guarantee mechanical continuity.
• Do not bend the mesh sharply, as the mesh fibres may get broken.
• Mount the corners on any edges and overlap them with the mesh by about 15-20 cm.
• Drill as many 24mm-wide holes as required by the engineer to accommodate the through connections, into compact
areas of the wall, and preferably by using rotary tools. For single connectors (in case of non-through holes and/or if the
reinforcement is on one side of the wall only), a 14 to 18mm-wide hole will be sufficient.
• Clean the holes, fit in the connectors and inject some chemical fittings or structural shrinkage-compensating mortar.
• Add a layer of render of about 2.5-3 cm, depending on the engineer’s specifications.
• Lay the finish, if required.
