Refer to the Federal Signal website for individual certificates Section 1.0 System Architecture and Extension Numbering Worksheet Overview : The following worksheet provides an easy means to document and design an ECHO system. On the top of the page, the terminal block of an ECHO-48 control cabinet is shown (Main or Slave). If using less than 48 outputs fewer terminal blocks are present, representing the lower capacity control unit ordered. ECHO control cabinets are offered in increments of 8 starting with ECHO-8 through ECHO-48, as labeled on the top of the worksheet page. Handsets or interface units are wired to the block from left to right. This also coincides with the extension (address) number, starting from lowest to highest, from left to right. Each field unit requires a homerun two-conductor data line wired directly to each field station or interface. Each block of 8 terminals represents a line card output. A fully loaded cabinet is capable of up to 48 terminations. Two ECHO control cabinets can be connected together up to 1000 feet apart in order to expand the system capacity to a maximum of 96 stations. If more than 96 stations are required, but less than or equal to 9072, a separate 19” rack mounting approach is used in order to conserve space and provide additional efficiencies. Below each heading of control unit type (ECHO-8, ECHO-16, ECHO-24, ECHO-32, ECHO-40, ECHO-48) there are eight labeled boxes representing the outputs of each line card. Each Line Card output is further broken down by Model, Extension, and Location. These Line Card positions (1-8) directly correspond to the terminal block positions (1-8) as shown below each terminal block. Wiring pairs are connected to the terminal block positions according to the assignments provided in the work sheet. Extension Assignments: The ECHO system provides the facilities to have 2, 3, or 4, digit address / extension numbers. The system can only be configured for one of these extension lengths. Mixed extension digit lengths are not possible. ECHO uses a method of pre-assigned extension numbers, determined by which extension block the field device is connected to. In addition to the extension worksheet, an extension assignment table is provided. This table should be referenced when setting up your system design. Utilizing this Extension Worksheet and the Extension Assignment Table easily provides you with documentation suitable to allow your installation contractor to connect the field stations to your ECHO control in the proper order. The network is virtually immune to noise and provides 30 simultaneous communications channels. The system is capable of digitizing and transmitting audio and control data instantly. The heart of the system is the ECHO control unit, which houses the mother board and line drivers. The motherboard provides a central point of programming and has an on board RS-232 port allowing it to be programmed via the optional ECHO-SFW Windows software, or remotely via dial-up connection. The system is also field programmable from any handset that has a LCD display. Line cards communicate to each field device via two wires. Each Line card drives a maximum of 8 field devices up to 1.2 miles away. ECHO control units can hold up to 6 line cards giving a maximum capacity of 48 stations. Two cabinets can be tied together up to 1000 feet apart expanding the system to 96 stations. Systems requiring more than 96 stations utilize a 19° rack mount approach allowing for a maximum capacity of 9072 stations. The system is capable of delivering high quality audio via landline wiring to a multitude of devices All field devices are wired to the central control via a dedicated wire pair. These wires can be standard telecommunication grade cables. The ECHO central control provides all audio and power required to power the field stations. Power is only required to energize amplified speakers or siren arrays and is done so at the local level or via a central UPS system. Systems: Designing and laying out a system utilizing the ECHO network is simple. Pre- engineered interfaces and the ability to communicate over hard-wire or fiber optics are standard features. Interfaces allow the system to easily integrate into other systems. These interfaces include: A. Audio Input Unit (ECHO-AIU) — Allows audio to be sent over the network as All- Call, Emergency All-Call, to an individual station, or to any group (Zone). B. Telephone Interface (ECHO-PBXI) — Allows any ECHO intercom station to act as a telephone in order to place phone calls. In addition, outside telephone calls can be place directly to any ECHO handset station. C. Two-Way Radio (ECHO-2WRI) - Ties the system to any radio system allowing communications over hand-held radios and other RF systems. D. Public Address Interface (ECHO-PAl) — Ties the ECHO page audio to standard public address amplifiers or racks. The ECHO control cabinet is offered in two sizes. The ECHO-8S and ECHO-16S are shorter versions of the cabinet for applications where system expansion beyond 16 field stations is not probable. The regular full size cabinet comes in all versions including the ECHO-8, ECHO-16, ECHO-24, ECHO32, ECHO-40, and ECHO-48. The control cabinet boxes are NEMA 1. It is possible to purchase the individual components that make up the controller for applications where standard cabinet's sizes are not feasible. The user has two options that include the use of copper conductors or fiber optic transceivers when extended range applications are required. Field wiring to the handsets and interfaces are non-polarized allowing a tisk free installation to ocour. ECHO control units can be interconnected up to 1000 feet via standard copper conductors. When connecting two cabinets together an ECHO-MC modem card is required for each control cabinet. ECHO hazardous location handsets E1 & E2 series provide a N.O. dry contact closure that energizes during ring tone. This relay is convenient for activating beacons or providing remote control functions.
