The Duff

Section D
Attributions: When the video of Bianca Piper at the mall is leaked, she automatically assumes it
was Wesley’s doing, as he had once before not defended her in front of his friends. She refuses
to believe him when he says it wasn’t him.

Halo effect: Everyone believes that Jess and Casey are nice hearted girls without even knowing
them, simply because they are friends with Bianca Piper.

Ideal self-concept: Bianca Piper wishes to have a model like body like her friends Jess and
Casey.

Incongruence: Bianca Piper believes at first that she will be unable to write an article on
homecoming, but when she does end up writing it, it becomes very famous and gets viral.

Interpret: When Bianca tells Wesley that he can use her special rock anytime, he interprets it as
an invitation to take girls there.

Pattern: Madison has an on and off relationship with Wesley. The pattern that is to be noticed
throughout the movie is that whenever Wesley talks to the Duff, Madison intervenes to make her
claim. She acts possessive around the duff only.

Perception: Bianca perceives Toby’s invitation for dinner as him being interested in her, when
he actually invited her thinking she’d bring her friends with her.

Role: Jess and Casey play their roles as students by greeting their teachers nicely.

Self – concept: Bianca’s self-concept is that she’s ugly and useless.

Self-esteem: After finding out that people think of her as The Duff, her self-esteem plummets
and she severs ties with her friends.

Self-fulfilling prophecy: After hearing what Wesley had to say about Bianca – her being the
Designated Ugly Fat Friend – she starts to dress up that way too, not caring about how she looks
anymore.

Self-talk: Throughout the movie Bianca is shown to be talking to herself.

Stereotypes: Wesley is a jock and Bianca immediately thinks of him as a conceited guy who
wouldn’t want to be seen with her in public.
