The Heretic's Daughter
A Novel
by Kathleen Kent
Paperback, Oct 2009,
368 pages.

review by : Diska Amanda

I absolutely love this novel, and this book will always hold a special place in my
heart. Kathleen Kent's novel, from the perspective of young Sarah Carrier, was moving and
informative. The Salem witch trials, and that time in history, were obviously well researched
by Kent and written so that the reader can see and feel what the characters lived through.

The story happened quite a long time ago, when people were easily suspicious of
everything and easily intimidated. It happened to Sarah carrier and her family and some
unlucky people who were blamed by others for something they didn’t do.
Sarah and her family lived in the city of Andover, New England. She was only about
ten years old when she realized that people living around their house were not really
welcoming her family. Things got worse when her mother was arrested and sent to jail
because of something she didn’t commit. She was accused of practicing black magic just
because some women said so. They pretended to suffer from some kind of disease and
pointed out that it was Martha Carrier’s doing. Following her mother, Richard, Sarah’s oldest
brother was also sent to jail. Later on, even Sarah and her brothers Andrew and Tom were
also put behind bars. It hurt Sarah when her mother asked her to admit that her mother was
indeed practicing black magic. Her mother then was sentenced to death and Sarah and her
brothers were released. So many years later, Sarah finally found out why her mother admitted
being guilty of practicing black magic. Read the book and you’ll find a touching story of how
much a mother loved her family so dearly.

The following text is for questions 1 to 5.

It was the dawn of science and technology. Anything seemed possible –even the creation of
life itself. Victor Frankenstein becomes obsessed with this idea and works relentlessly to
prove his theories; but the glory he imagined becomes a living nightmare –not only for him,
but for his friends and family too.

Mary Shelley’s gothic horror story- Frankenstein-was first published in 1818 and has been
the inspiration behind numerous stage productions and films – many of which strayed a long
way away from her original masterpiece. Classical Comics presenting a full-colour graphic
novel remains true to this classic tale, bringing the original story to life which has never been
created before.

This graphic novel is available in two versions: Original Text and Quick Text editions. The
Original Text stays faithful to Shelley’s original text, while the Quick Text brings the story
up to date by presenting the text into a more simplified style so that the tale is accessible to
all readers.

The Quick Text edition will allow you to soak up a general feeling for the characters and
locations, while the Original Text version will help you easily slip into the language in which
the novel was written.

Even if you’re not studying the original, this graphic novel is worth buying. It’s a great story,
and should be one that everyone has the chance to read. Now, thanks to this release, even
those who don’t particularly like to read too much are given the chance to find this tale and
hopefully it may encourage them to search out the original book too.

As with previous Classical Comics, the presentation is first class. The best grade glossy paper
really helps to set this graphic novel head and shoulders above the usual comic book releases
on the market. Not only that, you also get a pretty comprehensive biography of Shelley; Mary
Shelley’s Family Tree; a feature that explains what life was like in the year of the book’s
release; and a brief look on how Frankenstein has been adapted to many different formats
over the years.

Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stones

Judged by this first volume, the Harry Potter books are a fine addition to English children’s
fantasy literature. Harry Potter, orphaned when his parents are killed by the evil wizard
Voldemort, is taken in by his aunt and uncle, who are Muggles – ordinary, non-magical
people. Harry is rather out of place there, but things improve greatly for him when goes to the
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – except that one of the staff is in league with
Voldemort.

Part of the attention of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone comes from the familiar but
at the same time exotic setting of an English public school, complete with houses and
schoolboy adventures, in which Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione struggle to save the
world and win the house cup.

So Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will be a great Christmas present for kids who
haven’t read it yet – and it is a book that adults (at least those without stunted imaginations)
can read as well.

2012 Film
2012 is Roland Emmerich's film which uses the Mayan calendar and other endof-days
prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It images the world coming to an end in 2012.

2012 film brings off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. It starts when
Cussack drives a limo through the streets of Los Angeles as freeways and skyscrapers
crumble all round him from the shock of a 10.5 R.S. earthquake. The preposterous flying
sequence is equally thrilling. The climax occurs aboard the giant ark, when an equipment
malfunction threatens almost the entire mission.

Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the necessary clarity. In 2012
film, Emmerich leaves us confused as to exactly what is happening to whom. However,
Emmerich' 2012 deserves credit for casting Cussack.

McCarthy has perhaps his best role ever as Peet's cocky. Danny Glover lends dignity to the
role of the president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist, brings a moving sense of
anguish to a stock role. Piatt has fun playing the villain of the piece, and Woody Harrelson
also chews the scenery as a bugeyed radio prophet trying to warm his listeners about
Armagedon.

All in one, 2012's cinematography, production design and visual effects are awards-worthy.
Music also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up. Adam Lambert, who
provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.

Text 2 for question 2 to 3

Since the first production of “Private Lives” in 1930, with the theatre’s two leading
sophisticates Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence in the leads, the play as tended to be
chosen as a vehicle for starts.
QUT Academy of the Arts’ production boasted no ‘stars’, but certainly fielded
potential stars in a sparkling performance that brought out just how fine a piece of
craftsmanship Coward’s play is. More than 60 years later, what new could be deduced from
so familiar a theme? Director Rod Wissler’s highly perceptive approach went beyond the
glittery surface of Witty banter to the darker implications beneath.
With the shifting of attitudes to social values, it became clear that Victor and Sibly
were potentially the more admirable of the couples, with standards better adjusted than the
volatile and self-indulgent Elyot and Amanda.
The wit was there, dexterously ping-ponged to and fro by a vibrant Amanda
(Catherine Jones) and a suave Elyot (Daniel Kealy). Julie Eckersley’s Sibly was a delightful
creation, and Phillip Cameron-Smith’s more serious playing was just right for Victor. Jodie
Levesconte was a superb French maid, James Maclean’s set captured the thirties atmosphere
with many subtle touches.
All involved deserve the highest praise.
31. According to the passage, “Private Live” brought out a sparkling performance of the
stars because of the great work of ….

32. Who did act as couples for Victor and Sibly in the “Private Live”?

The story to ‘Kung Fu Panda

The story to ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is nothing really new, but it is told so well as to actually pack
an emotional punch. And it never comes off as laughable, which in lesser hands could easily
have happened. Speaking of laughs, there are many to be had here as well. ‘Kung Fu Panda’
works on just about every level a family movie can.

The cast features Jack Black as Po the Panda. The furious five, the most feared group of
warriors in all of China, consists of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis
(Seth Roger), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross). Their master is Shifu (Dustin
Hoffman), a fur ball creature who is a legendary teacher of Kung Fu. Escaped from prison
and on hi way to claim the Dragon Scroll, which will make him the all powerful Dragon
Warrior, is the good gone bad Tai Lung (Ian McShane). But first, he’ll have to muscle his
way around 400 pounds of panda to get to it.

‘Kung Fu Panda’ is a damn good time at the movies. This was the movie that Dreamworks
Animation so desperately needed after the disappointing ‘Shrek The Third’. With gorgeous
animation, spectacular action, a great cast and dramatic weight of an Akira Kurosawa film,
Kung Fu Panda is one of the favourite movie of the year.

37. Which of the following quality does not describe the movie?

B. Touching
C. Stunning movie picture
D. Excellent actors
E. Unexciting
38. Shrek The Third is ….

B. Tigress
C. Shifu
D. Tai Lung
E. Viper
40. The phrase ’a full ball creature’ means….
A. An animal who likes to play fur ball
B. A ball-size creature which is hairy
C. An animal with black and white skin
D. An animal who is good at Kung Fu
E. A hairy animal
The Amazing Spiderman 2
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ,released with the subtitle Rise of Electro in some markets is a 2014
American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, directed by Marc
Webb and released by Columbia Pictures. It is the fifth theatrical Spider-Man film produced
by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Entertainment, and serves as a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.
I was skeptical when I wanted to watch this movie, but I was wrong and I think this second sequel is
really great. Unlike its predecessor, this film is full of action, humor, and emotional. Played by the big
players, the story is well-written. The action is really spectacular and the final scene makes me
satisfied.

The story begins when Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) struggled to maintain his relationship with
Gwen (Emma Stone) after her father’s death. His actions also causes the emergence of a new
enemy, Electro, a villain played by James Foxx. Peter also continue to investigate what happened to
his father and reunited with his old friend, Harry Osborn. This movie is ended by the death of Gwen
that makes the audience will be very emotional and sad.

However I have to criticize about this film addressed to Paul Giamatti who plays Rhino. His
appearance is too over. His acting also does not show that he is a feared villain. It would be a serious
problem for the next Spiderman series. So I hope he can improve his acting better than before.

Overall, I think this is the best superhero movie since the appearance of The Dark Knight Rises. The
script is well-written and convincing. I am sure the next series will be outstanding superhero movie. I
recommend this movie to anyone who loves Spider-man or other superhero movies.
