Alan Jeffrey from the Brenthurst Library will give a demonstration on how to preserve
old documents, photographs, pictures, etc.

You are invited to bring old manuscripts, documents and books to the meeting
because he indicated that it would be hands on demonstration. Your editor had the
privilege of visiting the Brenthurst Library on a fair number of occasions and it is
absolutely worthwhile. The Library has its own facilities to restore precious
documents and they do a wonderful work there.

Please bring your valuables to get advice from an expert.

FAMILY BIBLE PROJECT!!!!

Our Chairman, Bob Saunders, Giel Nel and your editor had an interview with the director of
Museum Africa [“MA”] Ms. Diana Wall and the manager of publications Ms. Linda Chernis
at the MA to discuss the publication of the digital images of the Family Bibles in our
possession. This meeting took place Thursday 15 March 2012.

The previous agreement with MA was that GSSA would not publish the images on our
website, but transcribe the contents and publish the transcriptions.

This has now changed entirely.

Bob handed Ms. Wall two CD‟s and two books with the images of the Family Bibles. When
Ms. Wall paged through the two books, she immediately looked at us and said: “Why don‟t
you publish the images on your website and give MA due credit?” Ms. Chernis was in
agreement and very excited.

Well, well, we were completely overwhelmed and delighted. Of course we will do that as soon
as is possible. We will publish the images on www.genza.org.za being GSSA‟s website.

We extend our gratitude to MA for this wonderful concession they made. It is now agreed
that GSSA may and will publish the images of the Family Bibles in the possession of MA on
GSSA‟s website with due credit to MA. Any queries will be forwarded to MA for attention.

Die plan van aksie vir hierdie Familie Bybels projek is soos volg:

 Daar word „n indeks voorberei vir die MA Familie Bybels. Daar is 261 foto‟s uit 39
Familie Bybels en geskrifte met genealogiese inligting.
 Die twee bundels wat vir MA gegee is, moet vervang word. Dit word in monochroom
gedruk vir bewaring en navorsingsdoeleindes in die Biblioteek van Wes-Gauteng Tak
van die GGSA.
 Die foto‟s wat geneem is by die Johannesburgse Openbare Biblioteek met die
vriendelike toestemming en medewerking van die Hoof Bibliotekaris, Mnr. Alastair
Marshall, word voorsien van „n indeks. Dit word tans gedruk. Dit sal later in
monochroom beskikbaar wees vir navorsingsdoeleindes in die Biblioteek van Wes-
Gauteng Tak van die GGSA.
 Daar is nog ander foto‟s van Familie Bybels wat voorsien word van indekse en word
tans gedruk. Dit sal ook in monochroom in ons Biblioteek beskikbaar wees vir
navorsingsdoeleindes.
 Hierdie foto‟s sal mettertyd in kleur op die webtuiste van GGSA beskikbaar wees.

Hier is ‘n voorsmakie van hoe van die foto’s lyk wat ons gaan publiseer
op GGSA se webtuiste.
Die publikasies vir ons Biblioteek sal monochroom wees.

Hier onder is „n foto van een van die oudste Familie Bybels wat ons in MA se Biblioteek
gekry het. Dit was „n groot plesier, maar besonder moeilik, om hierdie boek te hanteer. Die
oomblik toe Me. Chernis dit uit die verpakking gehaal het, het ons van onverwagte opwinding
begin lag. Die handskrif is moeilik om te lees en die taal is verskriklik oud modies en
gedateerd. Die familie geskiedenis word in hierdie Bybel uiteengesit van geboorte tot dood.
Daar is ook beeldmateriaal van hoe iemand “skoonskrif” geoefen het – dit is effens sigbaar op
die linkerkant van hierdie foto. Die persoon het FLEMING op verskillende maniere gespel.
Dit is heerlike materiaal om na te kyk.

ONS BYEENKOMS OP SATERDAG 24 MAART 2012

Christoff Erasmus is ‘n doktorale student by Universiteit Pretoria en het met ons gesels oor die Genetiese
voorouer bepaling van die Afrikaner populasie in Suid-Afrika en die verband tussen stambome en
genetiese inligting. Sy PowerPoint aanbieding was besonder goed toegelig met baie inligting waarvan
sommige hoogs tegnies was.

Sy aanbieding word in groter besonderhede gerapporteer in ons tak se blog en u word aangeraai om dit
daar te lees.
