Abstract

The experimental study was conducted for the AA5182 aluminum alloy with
the butt joint configuration using pulsed Nd: YAG laser welding and Al5TiB filler
material. In this project, laser welding was carried out at different values of voltage
(beam power), pulse duration and focus (spot diameter). A 200 W LATICOM
MUL-1-M-200 Nd: YAG was used to weld 1 mm thick AA5182 aluminum plates.
Tensile testing of the samples was done using a universal tensile testing machine to
find out the ultimate tensile strength. The results were analyzed using the Taguchi
method and linear regression analysis for optimum parameters and degree to which
each factor contributes respectively. The equation is found out to predict the relation
between ultimate tensile strength, voltage, pulse duration and focus.
Results indicate that ultimate tensile strength increases with increase in pulse
duration. Voltage and focus are low influence parameters for laser welding of the
AA5182-O aluminum alloy.
The thesis is stated on 53 pages, containing 17 figures, 13 tables and a list of
