Your Pronunciation Needs
Speaking Activities
Complete one or more of these activities. They will give your teacher a general idea
of your pronunciation ability.
Part 1 Read a Paragraph
Part 2 Finish a Picture Story
Part 8 Answer Questions
You can make an appointment with your teacher or make a recording. You may
submit the recording on a CD or cassette tape or send a voice file by email.
Your teacher can use the Pronunciation Checklist on page 6 to record observations.
At the end of the course, measure your progress by repeating one or two of the
speaking activities.Part 1 Reading a Paragraph
Look over the paragraph to see if you understand it. Do you have any questions? If not,
read the paragraph out loud. Speak as naturally as possible.
1 ‘What is the goal of pronunciation? Do you need to sound like a
2 native speaker? Do you have to lose your accent to be understood?
3 When setting goals, think about the situations in which you speak
4 English. For example, if you use the telephone at work, your
5 pronunciation needs to be very clear. In casual conversations with
® friends or classmates, your speech can be more relaxed.
7 In general, it is important to be realistic. You do not need perfect
8 pronunciation. You can speak with an accent and still be clear. In this
® course, you will learn which pronunciation features help your listener
10 the most. You will also learn that changing pronunciation is gradual.
