When discussing the ten rules to live by, one rule that is significant is, treat people as

human beings. Justice is a complex ethical principle, with meaning the fair treatment of
individuals Justice is concerned with the equitable distribution of benefits and burdens to
individuals in social institutions, and how the rights of various individuals are realized. When
treating people as human beings you are giving a just behavior and/or treatment.
In the novel, Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck, Lennie is the protagonist having the conflict
follow him and his partner George. Most of the conflicts involve him. Lennie is a round
character showing many different characteristics. Although he is a big guy, Lennie seems to be
the nicest person around.Lennie always follows around George, always looking up and listening
to him. Lennie always looks forward to raising rabbits bringing no harm, yet seems to find
himself in trouble not realizing his own strength. When stating the rule, “ Treat people as human
beings,” Lennie definitely follows it. In the novel Lennie is talking to George about always
staying together, “ An’ I got you. We got each other, that’s what, that gives a hoot in hell about
us,’ Lennie cried in triumph” (steinbeck,104). Lennie throughout the book always believes in
having anothers back. He was always nice listening to people and treating others in a kind way.
He looked up to George, therefore had George’s back. Another example was when curley
attacked Lennie, “ Make ‘um let me alone, George.’ He backed until he was against the wall, and
Curley followed, slugging in the face. Lennie’s hands remained at his sides; he was too
frightened to defend himself,” (Steinbeck, 63). As you can see Lennie never wanted no harm. He
wanted to treat everybody as a human being he never tried to hurt anybody. This quote proves
that even when Lennie is getting beat he still doesn’t react unless told he just cries out.
Although Lennie is a nice fella, and treats people as human beings, some might disagree.
There might be a disagreement because everything he touches he seems to hurt. On page 91 of
the novel it states, “...and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still,
for Lennie had broken her neck.” Lennie doesn’t realize his own strength. He doesn’t ever mean
to hurt anyone/anything. He was just trying to quiet curley’s wife down. He still treated her like a
human and was nice. He never acted as if she was lower than him or any other person.
Taken together, Lennie is a good person. He treats people as human beings and nothing
less. Living by this rule caused Lennie to be walked over, though known to be a nice fella.
