Shooting script

Situated between London and Oxford lies High Wycombe, known for
its production of paper, cloth and furniture it is a quiet market
town just off the M40. With a rich and deep history dating back to
time of the Romans, its has since grown into the second largest
settlement in the leafy county of Buckinghamshire with a
population of over 133,000. Although the surrounding areas are
some of the most affluent in the country, Wycombe has areas that
are incredibly deprived and underdeveloped. Not only this but
there is a darker more sinister side to this town.

July 7 2005 4 men attack public transport systems throughout

London by using homemade peroxide bombs in what would become the
deadliest attack on UK soil since the Lockerbie hijacking in 1988.
One of those men Germaine Lindsay whos bomb had killed 27 people
including himself had links to the area and lived only a few miles
away in the town of Aylesbury. At the time the people of Wycombe
had no idea that this was the start of a long and dark path they
would be sent down.

Just over 1 year later in an overnight operation 24 men were

arrested throughout the country as part of an investigation into
an alleged plot to detonate liquid bombs on at least 5 separate
flights departing from Heathrow all heading for the United States
and Canada. 5 of these men were arrested in High Wycombe. Of these
5 men 3 actually from the town were accused of conspiracy to
murder by causing explosions involving liquid bombs. Although 1
was aquitted of all terrorism charges 2 of the 3 men were tried
and sentenced to 36 years and 22 years respectively. Assad Sarwar
and Umar Islam were accused of being the footsoldiers of an
elaborate al-qaeda plot which would have resulted in the loss of
countless innocent lives. The news sent shockwaves through the
town. But unfortunalty this was far from the last of it.

In 2014 an alleged plot to kill the queen at a remembrance day

service was uncovered by police and multiple raids took place in
the Desborough area of town. Yousaf Syed who was only 19 years old
at the time had his home raided and was charged along with his
cousin Nadir and 1 other. When tried the jury failed to make a
decision regarding Syed and he was eventually aquitted, his cousin
Nadir however was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
A trend of young men becoming radicalized had started to show
itself.

Over the course of just a few years 3 high profile cases emerged
of young men from the town who had been radicalized and left the
country to fight with terrorist organizations. One was an ex
grammar school student and only 18 years old, One had lived
locally his entire life and worked as a security guard at a local
supermarket and one was an unassuming young man who had converted
Manav Thaker - 971546
The Henley College - 62441

to islam at the age of 19. When Shabazz Suleman and and Omar
Hussain left the country they did so claiming they would be
providing aid work to the people of Syria, both ended up fighting
alongside ISIS forces. Thomas Evans however left for Somalia and
joined the group known as al-Shabaab. He was killed by Kenyan
defense forces in 2015 and his family were a part of the Channel 4
documentary ‘my son the Jihadi’. The programme ended up winning a
BAFTA and highlighted the affect radicalization can have, on not
only those directly impacted by their actions but also the family
and friends that they leave behind. Speaking to someone who knew a
friend who was radicalized I began to understand that truly anyone
can be radicalized.

The radicalization of these men initiated a split within the towns

people, of which roughly 20% are muslim. The affect was felt
throughout the entire polulation, local businesses are affected
and also incidents of violence and retaliation occur. People start
to blame eachother and they become divided even more than ever.

But there are some working to change this, to inspire hope within
the people of this small community. Working to prove that people
of all faiths and cultures can live side by side in harmony and
that select instances would not define an entire population of
people.

The town has certainly gained a less than desireable reputation

but the people dedicated to this place are not going to sit by and
just watch it descend further. Into chaos. People here are ready
for change and are inspiring it now. In my eyes there is more than
a little hope for this old market town in the south of England.

Contingency Plan

The contingencies for this production will hopefully be kept to a minimum due to the
fact that there have already been problems regarding interviews etc. It is for that
reason that I am certain that none of them will cancel on me, however if one does for
example I will have someone else on hold just in case. This person is also a business
owner in Wycombe but I am very close to the individual with them living with me.
Because of this I can definitely rely on them to replace someone if they do have to
cancel in case of an emergency. I have learnt from my last productions and have made
sure to purchase a tripod in order to make my shots smoother, this was essential and
was done well in advance to filming weeks. I have also given myself ample time to shoot
my b-roll so that if there is an equipment problem I can resolve it and come back and
finish another day.
