Listening text
I’m going to tell you about some of the parts of a small aeroplane. I’m also going to tell you what
materials they are made from, the properties of those materials, and also the functions of the parts.
First of all, let me tell you about part A. This is called the fuselage. It’s made of aluminium.
Aluminium is used because of its lightness. The main function of the fuselage is to contain the
passengers and the cargo.
The second part is part B. This is called a strut. The strut is made of steel, and this metal is used
because of its toughness and strength. The main purpose of the strut is to support the wing.
Finally I’m going to tell you about the third part, part C. This is called the window. This is usually
made of plastic. Plastic is used for the window (and not glass) because it is a very tough material. It
doesn’t break easily. It is also transparent. The main function of the window is to allow the pilot to
see outside the plane

Fig. 1 shows that this year, 50% of all accidents were caused by falls from scaffolding. Only 20% of

Different materials are used for making different things. Copper is used for making electric wires
because it is easy to stretch, but it is difficult to break. We use iron for making vices because it is
