Perawat terlibat dalam perawatan transisi dari “cure” to “care” di ICU, dengan
memanfaatkan berbagai peran dan strategi untuk bekerja dengan baik dengan pasien,
keluarga dan rekan kerja.Coombs et al (2012) menjelaskan ada tiga tahap yang dilalui
pasien dalam perawatan intensif di ICU yaitu dari penerimaan dengan harapan pemulihan,
ke transisi ke akhir perawatan hidup dan kematian yang terkontrol. Perawat berusaha
melawan dampak yang tidak manusiawi dari lingkungan yang sangat teknis dan untuk
memprioritaskan kematian yang damai saat terapi penyembuhan sudah tidak berguna
(Field, 1997).
