Plan of Work: Year One

Standard One: Articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision

Goal 1: Develop my leadership skills and my knowledge of the school

improvement process.

Activity (Observation): Review and “audit “ Ferndale’s improvement plan and

the districts' school improvement plan.

Timeline: This will occur during the winter of the 2016-2017 school year.

Support Needed: Access from my mentor and/or building administrator to see

both the schools and district improvement plan. Permission to join a

committee if one exists.

Goal 2: Learn more about creating mission and vision statements

Activity (Observation, Participation): Review Upland Hills’ mission and vision

statements and the data that lead to these goals.

Timeline: By February 2017

Support Needed: Access from my mentor to the data leading to the mission

and vision statements.

Standard Two: Sustaining school culture and instructional program

Goal 1: Learn more about behavior management as it relates to school-wide

plans.

Activity (Observation, Participation): I will observe, shadow, and interview

Ferndale schools’ behavior interventionist.

Timeline: This will occur in the winter of the 2016-2017 school year.

Support Needed: Permission from the behavior interventionist to shadow, as

well as time to interview. Also, I will need access from my mentor to review

student handbook if there is one.

Goal 2: I will learn more about Ferndale Upper Elementary Schools’

curriculum and common assessments

Activity (Observation): I will sit in on Grade Level Meetings and audit a

portion of the school's Science curriculum.

Timeline: By May 2017

Support: I will need my mentor to allow my observation of grade level

meetings and approval to “audit” a portion of the school's science curriculum.

Goal 3: Discover more about creating programs that support learning outside

of the school day.

Activity(Participation, Leadership): Further develop the after school program

at Upland Hills.

Timeline: June 2017

Support Needed: Time with school secretary to learn the current process for

participation. Support from the director in developing the program by offering

information on current school curriculum so we can support learning in the

after-school program.

Standard Three: Management of organization, operations, and resources

Goal 1: Increase my understanding of the hiring process

Activity (Participation, Observation): Sit in and/or participate in interviews of

new teachers and/or Para-educators. (Ferndale)

Timeline: By June 2017

Support: I will need support from my mentor and/or building administrator

in allowing me access to interviews.

Goal 2: Learn more about what goes into the evaluation process from the

administrator’s point of view.

Activity (Observation, Participation): I will observe teacher evaluations with

my mentor at Ferndale schools and Upland Hills. I will interview my mentors

about how they approach evaluations.

Timeline: By June 2017

Support Needed: I will need support from my mentor and permission from the

classroom teacher(s) being evaluated.

Goal 3: Learn more about schools budget and budgeting software tools.

Activity (Observation): Shadow the person in charge of budget and interview

them about the software used. (Upland Hills)

Timeline: March 2017

Support Needed: Time and permission from both mentor and person in

charge of budgeting to shadow and interview them.

Standard Four: Collaborating with community and responding to

diversity

Goal 1: To learn more about the districts and schools demographic

information and how to best serve them.

Activity (Participation, Leadership): I will learn more by obtaining and

studying information regarding a number of students, per-pupil spending,

staff, grade levels, and SES information of the community at both Ferndale and

Upland Hills.

Timeline: By March 2017

Support Needed: I will utilize my mentor and staff members to discuss the

information I find and how it is relevant to the implementation of school and

district-wide goals.

Goal 2: Discover more about tools to communicate with the community

Activity (Observation, Participation): Review and “audit” how Upland Hills

communicates with the community and review schools website.

Timeline: March 2017

Support Needed: Time with my mentor to ask him about this process. Time

with school secretary to discover her role in the process.

Standard Five: Acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner

Goal 1: To learn more about the role of the special education team in a school

Activity (Observation): Observation of administrator/student/parent

behavior meetings, special education staff meetings, and I.E.P Meetings

(Ferndale)

Timeline: By June 2017

Support: I will need access to these meetings through permission of

students/parents as well as what is expected from me as an intern in an IEP

meeting.

Goal 2: Increase my knowledge of tools, techniques, and information

regarding student behavior.

Activity (Participation, Leadership): Subscribe to Teaching Tolerance journal

and share ideas/resources with staff and director at Upland Hills

Timeline: January 2017

Support: Time and interest from staff and director to listen to what I have to

share.

Standard Six: Advocating for student learning

Goal 1: To learn more about the role and process of the school board

Activity 1 (Observation, Participation): Attend school board meetings when

possible.

Timeline: Meetings are every 3rd Monday of the month for Ferndale

Support: I will need my mentor for discussions regarding information

gathered at the meetings or through the study of video or minutes.

Activity 2 (Participation): Interview an Upland Hills school board member and

find out how policy is established or changed in the school. Review the Boards

Policy Manual.

Timeline: March 2017

Support Needed: Access from mentor to the Boards Policy Manual. Permission

from a board member to interview them.
