Big Brother’s goal: "to make the laws of Nature" and "destroy the spirit of Man"

O'Brian: "We control life, Winston, at all its levels. You are imagining that there is
something called human nature which will be outraged by what we do and will turn
against us. But we create human nature..."

● SEX: ("duty to the Party") Order can only be formed in society by eliminating human
nature and turn people into a “machine” or a “mindless person”..Big Brother wants to
turn humans into machines, to replace the organic by the inorganic, to create
synthetic happiness by eradicating all that may evoke natural passions and personal
inclinations. sexual behaviour being strictly controlled by the Sexual Bureau.
● PRIVACY:BB is watching you Big Brother controls Nature: taking away their citizens’
PRIVACY by watching them through tele-screens, brainwashing them to be blindly
loyal, and even claiming control over their bodies and mind.
● TORTURE: and fearsome machinery to inflict torture upon those it deems enemies. The
never ending wars
● Human beings are no longer conceived naturally but are instead conceived through
artificial insemination "artsem" and "taken from their mothers at birth, like eggs from a
hen". He talks about "food with its strange evil tastes".

NATURE Winston (representing the last man on earth)

● Orwell uses nature, sexuality, memory, and the past to position the reader against the
totalitarian present. Human love is contrasted to totalitarian hate and unspoiled nature
is the haven contrasted to an oppressive urban-industrial social order.
● the complex use of technology actually allows for the literal control of a human’s nature
● Nature appears to inspire Winston and allows him to see beauty and simplicity in an
otherwise violent, ugly, and frightening world.
● the Golden Country: - dream-like fantasy world, where he can stand among nature’s
beauty; in part II - Winston and Julia’ s refuge,away from the omniscient presence of BB
and the Thought Police. - the ideal world
● Winston argues that the Party cannot alter the stars or the universe; O’Brien answers
that it could if it needed to because the only reality that matters is in the human mind,
which the Party controls.
Two Minutes Hate, where there is shown a short movie for them to watch featuring the Party's
enemies, most notably Emmanuel Goldstein. The Party members usually get into some sort
of frenzy and shout rude expressions at the top of their lungs at the picture of Goldstein and
