Tutorial Simple Linear Regression

1. The marks obtained by 10 students for a Mathematics test and a Physics test are
as follows:
Student A B C D E F G H I J
Maths (x) 90 85 80 75 70 70 70 65 60 60
Physics(y) 95 90 80 70 65 65 65 60 55 55
a) Draw a scatter diagram for the data.
b) Find the equation of the regression line.
c) If the student gets 95 in mathematics, what is his expected mark for Physics?
d) Find the coefficient of determination and correlation. Comment these results.

2. The relationship between the number of hours of revision a day, X, with the
marks, Y, obtained by 9 students for a paper in an examination is shown below:
X 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
Y 55 60 53 70 72 68 80 90 85
a) Plot the data in a scatter diagram.
b) Calculate the average values of X and Y.
c) Find the equation of the regression line.
d) State the expected marks that a student who revises 8.5 hours a day.
e) Find the coefficient of determination and correlation. Comment these results.

3. For 10 pairs of married couples, the height of the husband (x cm) and the height
of the wife (y cm) are given
∑ x=1680 , ∑ x 2=282,280 , ∑ y=1620 , ∑ y2=262 ,450 , ∑ xy=272 ,179 .
Calculate the coefficient of correlation and determination and comment on the
result.

4. Various does of a poisonous substance were given to groups of 25 mice and the
following results were observed:
Dose (mg), x Number of deaths, y
4 1
6 3
8 6
10 8
12 14
14 16
16 20

a) Find the equation of the least squares line fit to these data.
b) Estimate the number of deaths in a group of 25 mice who receive a 7-miligram
dose of this poison.
c) Find the coefficient of determination and correlation. Comment these results.
d) Test the null hypothesis β 1=1 . 25 against the alternative hypothesis
β 1 >1. 25 at the 0.01 level of significance.

5. Two twins, X and Y, have the shoe sizes for the first eight years as given below:
X 1 3 4 6 8 9 10 12
Y 1 2 4 5 5 7 8 9
a) Find the equation of the regression line using
S ,S
xx yy and xy. S
b) Find the coefficient of determination and correlation. Comment these results.

6. The following table shows the assessed values and the selling prices of eight
houses, constituting a random sample of all the houses sold recently in a
metropolitan area:
Assessed value Selling price
70.3 114.4
102 169.3
62.5 106.2
74.8 125
57.9 99.8
81.6 132.1
110.4 174.2
88 143.5
a) Fit a least square line that will enable us to predict the selling price of a house
in that metropolitan area in term of its assessed value.
b) Test the null hypothesis β 1=1 . 3 against the alternative hypothesis
β 1 >1. 3 at the 0.05 level of significance.
