Chapter 3

Methodology

This chapter presents the research environment, design, participants, procedure

of data collection and data analysis method to be used in this study.

Research Environment

This study took place within Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod’s Mini Audio Visual

Room.

Design

This descriptive, qualitative study made use of non-participant observation

anchored on its objectives aiming to analyze the code switching patterns and functions

of teachers and students at Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod during the First Semester of

Academic Year 2015-2016.

Participants

Participants to this study are teachers and students holding their classes within

the Mini-AVR of the above target school during the First Semester, Academic Year 2015-

2016. Preference was specifically given to four (4) classes held at the Mini-AVR during

the vacant periods of the researchers.

Data Collection

Letter requests signed by the dean of the College of Arts, Sciences and Education

were sent to the teachers whose classes were recorded requesting clearance to collect the

needed data. A reply slip was attached to the letters where they may indicate their

responses to the said request. Documentation of data was in the form of audio-

recordings via mobile phone. To supplement the above data, field notes were taken

down to document intangible variables in the classroom.

Data Analysis

The data collected via audio recordings were enumerated in agreement with

Research Questions 1, 2, and 3 to get a clear picture of the pattern and functions of code

switching that is exactly happening in the Mini-AVR. Audio recordings from each class

were reviewed, analyzed, and transcribed to focus on the main variables needed by the

study.

Code-switching Measurements

In this study, the researchers adapted the matrix language frame of Myers

Scotton (1997, 2002) wherein the matrix language is English which is used as a medium

of instruction in educational institutions thus any utterance in Hiligaynon and other

regional languages utilized by conversants will be counted as a code-switch.
