Characterization of magnetic sensors at the operating

temperature of industrial applications
NPL has recently developed measurement capabilities that allow the characterization of magnetic sensors at the operational temperatures experienced in a range of
industrial applications. These include oil and gas down-hole drilling and space applications, where the temperature is considerably different to that used during their
development and calibration.
If you use magnetic sensors in the temperature range of - 55 °C to + 175 °C and need to establish with confidence that they will perform to the required specification,
NPL has the facilities to help.
The facilities established at NPL provide a low magnetic noise environment and standard coil systems that allow the application of DC and AC magnetic fields from a
few nT to over 2 mT and now simultaneously the temperature experienced in use.
This has been achieved by carefully incorporating a commercial air-forcing temperature system into the NPL low magnetic field facility. This facility uses a triaxial
Helmholtz coil cancellation system to reduce ambient fields to less than 0.5 nT. The cancellation system, temperature system and enclosure are shown below:

This new capability represents a step change in the ability to characterise magnetic sensors for, but not limited to, the automotive industry, geological exploration and
space applications and complements and extends the existing range of facilities available.
Related to this is a best practice guide on the generation and measurement of DC magnetic fields in the range 1 nT to 1 mT. If you would like to know more about this
guide or would like to discuss this work or any other magnetic measurement requirement, please contact Stuart Harmon (Tel: 020 8943 6908 | Email:
