The Love Shared between Juliet and Romeo

In Romeo and Juliet there are many forms of love relevant including romantic love,

platonic love, unrequited love, and familial. Out of all these types of love, romantic love is the

most relevant in Romeo and Juliet, because Romeo and Juliet love each other and have romantic

relations. Romantic love is when two people share a love with dating for marriage. It is a love

where two people share mutual feelings. They go on dates, spend time together, and plan to get

married. The usual things they say are “I love you”, they express their feelings to each other and

show each other they like the other. They feel happiness when they are around and feel love and

gratitude toward their significant other. This was relevant in the whole story of Romeo and

Juliet, between Juliet and Romeo. This shows that romantic love is the most relevant love in

Romeo and Juliet.

One example of romantic love in Romeo and Juliet is, the first time Romeo kissed Juliet

at the party.

ROMEO
“O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do.
They pray: grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.”
JULIET
“Saints do not move, though grant for prayers’ sake.”
ROMEO
“Then move not while my prayer’s effect I take.”
He kisses her.

“Thus from my lips, by thine, my sin is purged.”

(Shakespeare, I. IV. 114-120)
This was the first romantic encounter they had together, and it is a good example of how the rest

of the story goes. After that kiss, they each have fallen in love, which sets their actions in the

future. This shows the romantic love by the romantic actions they share.

Another example of romantic love is when Romeo tries to swear to Juliet his love to her,

and she says to not swear because she believes him.

ROMEO

“Lady, by yonder blessèd moon I vow,

That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops—”
JULIET
“O, swear not by the moon, th’ inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.”
ROMEO
“What shall I swear by?”
JULIET
“ Do not swear at all.
Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self,
Which is the god of my idolatry,
And I’ll believe thee.”
( Shakespeare, II. II. 115-120)

They agree to get married the next morning because they each love each other. This

shows the romantic level of marriage.

The movie West Side Story, shows the love from two people that are not allowed to love

each other. They go against the rules and date. They end up bringing the two sides together. This

was the goal of Romeo and Juliet when they got married. Another example is Gnomeo and

Juliet. The two gnomes love each other from the other side of the fence. They fight to cross the

fence and be together. This shows the sacrifice of romantic love. They risked their life to be

together. This all happens in Romeo and Juliet as well.

Throughout Romeo and Juliet, the most relevant love is romantic love. Romantic love is a

love shared by two people who has significant emotion for each other. They plan to get married

and have romantic relations, each of which Romeo and Juliet had. This is important for readers

to know, so they can realize the moments of real romantic love when it happens in the play.
